NPC: The Novel. You quickly notice the lack of internal reflection and characterisation - things just happen as the protagonist drifts from one action sequence to the next.

the protagonist doesn't even have a name anon, do you think the depersonalization might have been a literary strategy?

wow so deep anon how did you manage to figure that one out

Wait... your telling me... that an author who regularly doesn't even name his characters... was like... trying to depersonalize shit?

That's just how Cormac writes, none of his character have their thoughts revealed plainly, you have to go off of what they do and say

I wouldn't call McCarthy's characters NPCs. They're more like neanderthals.

Yep, then he snaps his neck and shoves it into the shithole in the outhouse. The man taking a piss outside that warned the other guys not to go in there saw his gaping cum filled ass sticking up in the air while his head was in the shithole.

It's near impossible to find this book in my country (Brazil). The last printing was in 2009, and online you can only find used ones for ludicrous prices (around 45 dollars)

>You quickly notice the lack of internal reflection and characterisation

No. You might notice the lack of *explicitly described* internal reflection but that's not at all the same thing. One of the reasons McCarthy is so good is that, like Shakespeare, he can convey exactly what his characters are thinking and feeling without ever mentioning it directly (and he can do it even when they're bottling it up).

Look at the exchange near the end, for example, where the Kid is on his own and runs into a party among whom is a young boy of fifteen who is basically trying to pick a fight. You don't get anything except lines of dialogue (CM doesn't even say who is speaking) and it's clear exactly what everyone is feeling.

The man looked up wearily. You aint callin me a liar are ye son?

I aint ye son.

How old are you?

That's some more of your business.

How old are you?

He's fifteen.

You hush your damn mouth.

He turned to the man. He dont speak for me, he said.

He's done spoke. I was fifteen year old when I was first shot.

I ain't never been shot.

You aint sixteen yet neither.

You aim to shoot me?

I aim to try to keep from it.

Come on Elrod.

You aint goin to shoot nobody. Maybe in the back or them asleep.

Elrod we're gone.
