Leon Edel's Henry James
Boswell's Life of Johnson holds the distinction of being the first modern style biography ever written, so there's that. Also, it's great.

James Boswell's biography of Samuel Johnson is the "classic". There's also Plutarch's lives.
Of the biographies I own, my favorites are Garff's Kierkegaard, Frank's Dostoevsky, and monk's Wittgenstein.
