What should I read next? Lately I've read the 1st book of The Dying Earth, the 1st Dune book, and the 1st Vampire Hunter D novella (and various non SFF books in between). They were all good enough but I think I want something a bit different before going back to the Dying Earth. Not sure if I'll continue Dune, it was entertaining at first but the end everything felt super rushed and was pretty 'meh'.
Thinking about hitting up McKillip again as one of the few decent female writers, is Riddle Masters of Hed any good?
Or, alternatively, is there any good SciFi that's more like the old school shit all futuristic and not grimdark/doomsday/people bad/lgbtqpz or whatever? Actually hopeful and maybe even fun?

No problem boyo.

There's always stuff like Poe(inb4 cliche), or someone more recent like Michael McDowell.

There's also a series I've seen being pushed literally called "Gothic Fantasy" by Flame Tree Studios - no idea who they are, had to look it up - that are really just a compilation of stories not really doing anything with Gothic Fiction themes; I'd suggest skipping those for the most part, although Japanese Folklore is my jam.

I do have it in my backlog. I am currently looking something more modern, both regarding the setting of the novel and the publish date.

This is a much better read than some of the genre's other entries simply because the author is telling a story and using the cultivation power level stuff as a worldbuilding detail/magic system rather than making it and progression within it the entire focus of the story.

Not happening. And i don't mean WoD going to shit, that was a foregone conclusion, but most fantasy nowadays that involves vampires is urban fantasy. And Its fucking terrible. Its all either Dresden Files copies and all that cliche shit that comes with it or reverse harem trash were a women is gang raped by vampires and werewolves until she likes it.

The only recent good vampire novel i can think of is "An Unattractive Vampire" and even then its more of a satirical comedy that plays with the tropes of vampires becoming useless and sparkly pretty boys.

Early scifi Ballard read either the World books (release order works they aren't related to each other beyond themes) or short story collections (Terminal Beach and Impossible Man both being very strong)
For "peak" of his career Ballard read The Atrocity Exhibition, Crash or High Rise. (Exhibition, Crash and Concrete Island is another thematic trilogy of sorts).
Late Ballard is also good though (actually my fav period of his) Cocaine Nights and Super-Cannes are a thematic set and then the last two books published are a strong end to his career.

I just started The Three Body Problem. I'm about 1/4 in, but it's pretty soft. I've hard praise about how it's hard scifi but it's soft as heck and the characters are not grounded nor realistic. Maybe I'm way too influenced by amerifat literature, and maybe it's a Chinese thing, but so far nobody seems that impressed by things that supposedly affect the whole damn universe. One guy said about the law of physics not following one another, and the main character just goes "nice, I guess that happened huh?", but when faced with the countdown numbers in his eyes, he suddenly acts like that Shen woman was the culprit and that she, or someone she knows, makes some "illusions". What the heck?

Anyway without spoiling things for me, what do you guys think? Is it a good book?

Three Body isn't great. I wouldn't recommend it as a standalone novel (although it has some interesting parts).

However, I thoroughly recommend the other two books in that trilogy, which requires you to read Three Body first. Just slog through it then start The Dark Forest, which will blow your fucking socks off. Trust me on this senpai

Are any of you currently writing, or do you have any experience with web serials?

I'm ~300 pages into a pre-write of a series I'm planning on publishing sometimes soon, and I'd like to hear about anyone's experiences with this type of publishing.

It's not something I've done before. I have plenty of experience writing, and I've written many books, but this would be my first real stab at publishing anything, at all.

Right now, I'm planning a Mon & Friday release of main chapters, which will be 15-20 pages a piece, and a Wednesday release of a side chapter, ~5 pages on average. I'll be publishing on Royal Road, because it's the best avenue for the genre.

My plan is to fund the serial through Patreon, 10 bucks would get you four weeks ahead of the free release.

Have any of you gone down this road before?

The plucky underdog in the 18th century Space Navy not being allowed to show just how brilliant he is by his incompetent and/or corrupt superiors is a pretty annoying one (the space marines being the close second).
Fuck we have a bona fide Space Force created by no other than God-Emperor Trump and it already has no (and does not want to have) any kind of connection to the Navy whether it's organizational or cultural.

Gollancz published a paperback collection of R.A. Lafferty stories that I have been reading.

I was put off from reading him sooner because of his association with Gene Wolfe and Jack Vance; I thought Lafferty would be similarly hard work, and I'm a lazy reader. But I've been pleasantly surprised by the five or so stories I've read. They are meandering and unpredictable tall tales, but they are charming in a folksy way. - The more popular a book is, the better it is.
- Readers are tired of an old male perspective and hence they want to read women
- Hugoes are a great award

Anyway, this time I done interacting with the brainlet(s) (who pretends to be more than 2 guys despite the fact that I have been posting similar opinions about Hugoes, contemporary literature, diversity, etc., ever since the general was created and always got almost exclusively positive responses, meaning he's just one or two newfags), and I will probably only post a thready warning from now on. He has continuously refused to engage in any sort of a constructive discussion, or give any kind of argumentation at all for his stances, instead opting to call me and others "pretentious" or outright ignore us.
Fucking faggot thinking he can come to this general and insult pretty much every writer that has been enjoyed here for years by calling them "dad tier" and "fossils" and force me to read Dan Brown and The Geek Feminist Revolution (an actual book by a writer he called "will be a classic for sure" and gave as an example of what makes contemporary speculative fiction better than it has ever been).
