I haven't read Tolstoy's big two yet, but from his novellas so far, the man's work is too domestic in scope for my tastes. Dosto at least comes up with interesting situations and questions. Tolstoy literally just tells his own life story as a wealthy landowning coomer with a midlife crisis, over and over.

I don't understand how anyone can like Hackstoevsky. Shit prose, shit characters. Made books longer so he would be paid more and just made everything more tedious. Every one of his books feels like a bad adaptation of a theater play, all of the characters are stiff caricatures, no question asked is natural - it's there because he had the urge to insert a random bit of himself into every character so they ask the most non sensical questions in the midst of whatever conversation. Everything in his worlds is so artificial and yet we're supposed to applaud the humanity and sincerity of his characters? Fuck off, the emperor wears no clothes.
And I can't stress enough how much more I hated the man after learning that he just wrote and wrote to get that sweet green - he was never in it for the art and the emotions, he was a greedy bearded anarchist who took advantage of people in need and inspired by a "rebellious" person.
