I take notes on almost every book I read and I feel that it slows me down. Should I stop? What are your general thoughts on taking notes while reading?

Depends if the notes are helping you or not. Very nice pic tho.

>> No.15139332

I’m about to start doing this. I won’t if I’m just reading for pleasure though.

If you have time, take it. I would say it is better to have a greater understanding than a more extensive library. Note taking and reflection on the content of the book will also vastly improve your memory of it.

I think it's a good idea and I wish I'd started doing it years ago.

I think it's a great habit. One problem i had was forgetting everything about a book just after finishing reading it. Taking notes helped me avoid such a thing. Also having notes helps you when you want to compare and contrast different books on certain points. I took 8 pages of notes when i read the Brothers Karamazov.

This isn't a bad thing though. Reflection takes time. Understanding concepts fully takes time. Take your time.

>> No.15139449

Stop taking notes, you wont really need it a lot and for me, personal y it males me put a little more difficulty to the habit of reading. I would recommend you to walk, its better.
When you have an urge to put something down in a notebook take a short walk around or apartment or guarden and try thinking about what you just read. Try to explain it. Then get back to reading. Its the best

Hard to say - any time there's something I find significant. It's quite subjective. That said, I take a lot more when I read non-fiction.

Mostly my "notes" consist of writing out any particularly good quotes I want to remember, perhaps with a short comment underneath.

This probably

>> No.15139588

What is the problem of it slowing you down? Why are you reading in a rush?

I say take your time. Write your notes. Not only will they make you savor the book better, but this book will be unique and will also reflect your tastes and opinions to possible future readers, maybe your children or grandchildren.

>>15139449
What is it with needing? Are we reducing our reading experience to need?
If so, me, a blue collared joe will read nothing more than texts on my cellphone. You are treating his great habit of writing while reading, which probably enriches his mind and makes him a better reader, improving his attention and memory, as if it were an addiction to drugs, an urge.

I have a notebook for all my notes, a5 lined pages. A typical 300 pages non fiction book would be 4 to 6 pages of notes.

I don't take notes as I read because I find it too distracting, after I finish a reading session I take a couple of minutes to write a handful of sentences about what I read in a notebook, if there was anything worth noting down.
