Seriously, what is the intellectual’s response to this? It seems that violence is a much more powerful tool than reason. What would a philosophy graduate do in the presence of an MMA fighter with whom he disagrees?

shoot him with a gun

That’s violence though. My question sought to get at the ineffectiveness of “quiet reflection”, “reason”, and “philosophy”. Assuming the philosophy student only had the tools of philosophy which he has been taught to use, what would he do when met with the challenge of violence? It seems to me we should strive to be men of action, not thinkers, if we want to assert our existence in the world.

>refuting your belief in philosophy
he didnt' refute anything though, he only punched a guy.
>Seriously, what is the intellectual’s response to this?
to brain damage? none.
to getting punch? run, there's no point in getting into a fight just because someone disagreed with you.
>It seems that violence is a much more powerful tool than reason.
depending on the situation, it is, in this case in particular it depends on the repercussions, the objective of punching someone until death etc etc

Run.

how many people will listen to you if you're only good to punch people in the face?

a lot of them if you’re good at it. see: Islam, Christianity (before it got all gay)

know Foucault better than he does, obviously. shouldn't be hard.

i study history. the funny thing about Foucault is that he considered himself some kind of brilliant historian, but actual historians dismiss him out of hand. the only times ive seen him mentioned are to point out how blatantly wrong he is.
a lot of people who fail in other disciplines end up in English departments. see Marx being laughed out of economics and landing in English.

draw a gun on him

issue with your strategy: giving someone brain damage actually increases their belief in philosophy

religions do more than punch people in the face for the people that believe in them.
christianity wasn't a choice some years back, so it's not like people listened to it, they just had to, look where it ended, same path islam will be in a couple hundred of years probably.

Forget Foucault is a solid book about why Foucault is shit

Foucault's books are also valid reasons for why he's shit
