I think the biggest weakness of the book is that Daisy is so annoying. She needed to be just a bit more attractive, so we could sympathize with Gatsby's obsession.

That's the point, he wanted to make her human. He was trying to recapture the time in his life before the war in addition to how he felt with Daisy. Ultimately, he died and it didn't matter, but he spent his life pursuing the past and some previous state of himself which is somewhat admirable, as opposed to someone like Buchanan who just exists with no intuition. The hero of the book is Nick, because he observed it all and then still acted in spite of it: going back to the midwest. Read Schopenhauer.
