I'm studying Portuguese. What are some good works of Portuguese literature to read? I'd prefer European Portuguese, but will take Brasilian or African suggestions as well.

Saramago, Camões, Eça de Queirós, Pessoa.

>> No.15084727

I would stay away from saramago. If you want to read commies, at least read the good ones, Miguel Torga, or the neo-realists like Alves Redol.

Im a native Portuguese and for me personally Pessoa is the most based, but the most crazy aswell.

>> No.15085771

Don't read Camões yet, his work is full of archaisms and is complex for someone who's still learning the language.

Eça de Queirós e Jorge Amado are good options.

Eça de Queirós is essential if you're serious into learning the language.
Húmus by Raul Brandão is a personal favorite.

Saramago "Memorial do Convento"
Teixeira de Pascoaes, anything
Vergílio Ferreira "Aparição"

>> No.15085999

As a native portuguese I had to learn pessoa and Queiros in 11th and 12th grade which made me hate that shit so fuck the educational system lmao

I feel you. The educational system tries so hard to push these old adult books into teenagers who still aren't interested or simply can't understand them, that ends up causing repulse.

Why?

>> No.15087735

Aside from the mentioned Pessoa, Machado, Camões, et al.
Antero de Quental is masterful, Olavo Bilac is too. Both great poets. Pessoa's partner was quite good for a woman. «Só» by Antonio Pereira Nobre also considered a classic withing Portugal.

The Alchemist should be an easy read.

Really though, Brazil is where it's at. They've basically made the language theirs. I also would reccomend listening to music for language learning.
