The writers of the show, as far as I can tell, are Rand fans because she gets name dropped occasionally in the dialogue. This scripting (“I don’t think about you at all”) basically mirrors a sentiment voiced by Howard Roark in Rand’s The Fountainhead. I find this theory upsetting, but mostly because it's difficult to reconcile with how much I love that show. I recall that Bert Cooper made a praising remark about a work of Ayn Rand at some point, and I was never able to understand why they wrote that in. At best I wonder if they were painting a picture of the flawed and limited perspective of these corporate men, but I thought Bert was supposed to be something of an exception. I really do think it's possible it was a deliberate imperfection of the character - he remained dedicated to a job in advertising, after all, he's not entirely awakened. I semi-recently watched the first season and part of the second. I remember there being at least two Ayd Rand references by that period of the show (one by Cooper and one by Pete) , and that’s still two more than the average television series, which makes me think the writers are Randians or at least interested in her work. Granted, as far as I know Rand was more popular back then than we give her credit for; from my memory The Fountainhead was pretty successful when in came out during the war. By the period that Madmen starts (1960) she would have had even more notoriety and Atlas Shrugged would have been published as well. She may have been more of a household name at that point, but it’s unclear whether that’s why she’s mentioned.
