I know it's a shitposting thread, but I've now read both capitalist realism and ghosts of my life now, and while his thesis for both of these books are brilliant, the subsequent execution in the last 80% of both books seems sorely lacking, ghosts of my life more so. Both being based off his blog, it seems he cobbled together his posts over time and only in hindsight found a running theme among them. If I wanted a non-musician to lecture me about Joy Division I would just go shitpost on /mu/. I'd love to see more fleshed out, less anecdotal evidence of these theories. He didn't even widen the topics in which he applied his theories. It was mostly music and a movie or two. Hauntology and CR are both seen in droves in things that aren't just the few mediums of media he dedicated his life to feeling sad about.

Why would a musician be any different than a non musician for this. By the way, fun fact, they could barely play their instruments when they first started.

I believe that when being a critic of a given medium one should know how to create within that medium. It's easy to tell when non-musicians or non-artists don't have the vocabulary or experience when analyzing things. Sometimes they make good points, there are always exceptions to any given rule. But it's hard to take people seriously when it feels like they are making everything up. It's kinda similar to the "the curtains are blue" thing. This is just my personal preference.

Oh he isn't? I am Norwegian myself so never looked after a translation. It would probably benefit the Norwegian philosophy community by getting him translated, giving us an opportunity to get on the map.

I’ll concede that these are serious 21st Century thinkers but they all just seem so small and narrow or hyper-specific compared to what came before. If I’m being honest, Zizek is the only one quite that small and narrow in my opinion but even he is more pop-philosopher than not.

It depends. The world is so diverse, and populated nowadays.

From my personal context, I don't find most of these guys in the thread. On the other hand, they might still relevant somewhere else.

Anyways, here are some people (thinkers or not) who I find influential to most or a big portion of the world:
>the Pope
>Donald Trump
>China's president
>Jordan Peterson
>Dalai Lama
>Angela Merkel
>Bill Gates
