This image makes me realize how dreadful bookclubs can be if done wrong. I swear these women spend 15 minutes discussing whatever YA shit they've read and the remaining five hours 45 mins either eating processed food like the whales they are, or trash-talking their husbands and whatever women haven't attended the club because they had better things to do than mingle with this filthy lowbrow group of soulless failures.

I look at this and the cynical part of me cringes. But another part vehemently wishes I could've been an aristocrat in the 18th/19th century, discussing the poetry, plays, and literature of the day, while sipping coffee in the salon and smoking the pipe. Instead I'm the only one in my social circle even vaguely interested in philosophy and literature and I have to get my fix on boards like these. I'm sure these girls have a lot of fun discussing their books, making a nice evening out of it, drinking some wine, having some snacks. While we're posting on anonymous basket weaving forums.

anyone who thinks the people and the activity pictured are anything but awesome is absolutely hopeless. I organized a book club my senior year of college and it was one of the best things I've ever done. I also looked up the book they're reading (THE RED TENT) and it actually sounds pretty interesting. I saw someone else post ANNA KARENINA, which is my favorite book, but I don't think I'd want to introduce myself by recommending something so long. I think I'd go with THE DEATH OF IVAN ILYICH, because it's another book dealing with religious themes and is pleasingly short.

it calls on a close familiarity with nietzsche and a sprawling knowledge of world history. I literally picked the below passage at random. Just know that it's a seriously tough read.

---

Vignola and Giacomo Delia Porta and the creation by Ignatius Loyola of the
Order that stands for the pure and abstract will of the Church, 1 just as there is
between the invisible operations and the unlimited range of the Order and the
arts of Calculus and Fugue.

Henceforward, then, the reader will not be shocked if we speak of a Baroque,
and even of a Jesuit, style in psychology, mathematics, and pure physics. The form-
language of dynamics, which puts the energetic contrast of capacity and inten-
sity in place of the volitionless somatic contrast of material and form, is one
common to all the mind-creations of those centuries.

Sure. Some Eastern European genes in there? She would be a generous and uncomplicated lover.

>Seated, grey top, jeans
She looks like a farmer's wife and not in a good way. Also, don't stick your dick in ginger.

>Beige top, black trousers, pendant necklace thingy
Obviously. Best in the room. She looks a bit like Hilary Hahn and that's a very good thing.

>Red top, red wine
Eek.

>Central, holding the book
She might be OK if she didn't have such terrible taste in literature.

>White top
Obviously. She's a cutie and she knows it. The little minx.

>Striped top
Sure. She looks as though her conversation would be banal. But she wouldn't be doing much talking.
