You may not like it, but Howard's Conans are peak western literature. All other books are gay in comparison

Gilgamesh has all that with less words

I like his Cormac Mac Art stories. They’re more fun, Cormac is wittier and there’s very little fantastical elements which are pretty hit and miss in Conan. Cormac is just high stakes adventure usually involving Vikings.

> death by suicide at age 30
>Howard's suicide and the circumstances surrounding it have led to speculation about his mental health. His mother had been ill with tuberculosis his entire life, and upon learning she had entered a coma from which she was not expected to wake, he walked out to his car and shot himself in the head.

Gilgamesh is a homoerotic love poem about him and Enkidu

No.
He uses a woman to draw him out of the wilderness after all.

Honestly impressive he managed to write so much that stuck so well in the mind of society before 30.

Ever notice how the Conan stories, despite being otherwise a very primitive expression of the heroic spirit, has no conception of Glory? At no point is brought up the idea of earning immortality through one's valour - everything remains on a sensual animal level
By this I suppose that the idea of Glory is not a natural one - it is a metaphysical one, which has to be discovered - people do not love the Iliad enough for first expressing it

Conan has a bit more interest in his legacy when he's a king, but no: Crom doesn't give a solitary shit. No Valhalla for Cimmerians.
Also, I'm beginning to think Conan never learned to count.

Sort of. Conan seems to be the type that has internalized goals and ideas of what is glorious. He could care less what anyone else thinks. He kind of reminds me of Pat Tillman. Ever read about him? He'd climb up those 200 foot tall spires that have lights on top, those things that light his college football fields, and read philosophy. Some people are more social, but the unbermensch that is Conan ( and was Tillman) lives by his own compass.
