If you're unfamiliar with the character and background surround the Iliad then I'd suggest it, Fagles' introduction is the best. It also has some interesting insight into the deterministic nature of Homer's gods and the psychology of his more divine character such as Helen and Achilles,

I do, fitzbro. He was a poet himself so his rendering of Homer is many times more insteresting than prose adaptations like Fagles' or Verity's.
