I kind of swing back and forth on the issue of whether an endogenous site culture can exist in the current year. on one hand, it seems like there are no longer separate communities anymore due to total cross pollination of users and content. I think a major problem that most (maybe all) sites on the internet haven't figured out how to deal with is how to avoid the online equivalent of open borders. Historically, I think most communities try to hide themselves sekrit club-style such that anyone who happens across them would be the sort of person who would be a good, high-quality member of the site - but as popularity grows, people from other places come in and drag the community in different directions (leading to the homogenized culture you describe). It doesn't help that community culture functions as basically a direct democracy, so if you get a reddit mob influx, you end up being culturally ruled by a reddit mob.

In my mind, the solution lies towards having a kind of citizenship test + invite system that can be used to control "immigration" in addition to a moderation system that functions as a kind of representative system with term limits: Users mark posts that they feel are exemplary of site culture, and when a user has accumulated enough marked posts from their fellow users, they are temporarily given moderator powers, perhaps for a month or two. I don't think such a system is perfect (and maybe tries to mirror real-world government too closely), but attempting to raise the technical barrier of entry - like the places >>14979788 talks about - is a losing battle in my opinion. All sekrit clubs eventually are found out and fall to mob rule.
