Some of them at the top don't even have good employment prospects but it's all based on the notion of STEM = guaranteed success

It’s hard to tell what the rationale of the creator for some of these rankings is. If it’s based on “practicality” and “return on investment,” it’s not that great of a list, or maybe it’s outdated. It buys too heavily into the STEM degree meme, when, in reality, just getting a degree in biology, chemistry, physics etc. isn’t SUPER useful by itself (today in America at least). That’s why people who get these degrees end up having to get a PhD eventually, either that or end up working shitty entry-level jobs at labs, pharmacies, factories etc., or becoming a public school teacher. I have a cousin who graduated with a degree in chemistry from a highly respected college and with a high GPA, and they work as a hairdresser now.

Even people who have gotten an economics degree complain about the job market for holders of an economics degree. Most young people in America are still dreaming that a bachelors is super-helpful in and of itself in the job market. It’s really not. It depends on how well you can network, maybe get some internships while in school, and to some extent on what degree you get.

The ratio of grads to jobs is way too high. There's 10-20 job openings for grads each year where I live, and maybe 200 fresh grads across each university.

When they say engineering is a transferable degree and many engineers work in other fields, that's not because they wanted to, it's because there's fuck all jobs and every man and his dog went and got an engineering degree.

There is huge demand for senior engineers but nobody wants to invest in the people that are supposed to replace them.

here's an argument then; society would be better off if it were ordered in such a way that meaningful and important things like the arts, philosophy, and quality of life in general were improved instead of the current system where everything is min-maxed to enrich the elites and keep the lower strata of society just satisfied enough to prevent rebellion. even if utilitarianism were used for good, that doesn't excuse it. imagine the entire Earth's surface covered in grey concrete brutalist factories, offices, and minimally viable domiciles for the indentured workers who operate them. one can't even look up to the starts for solace, they've all been blocked out by smog, as the factories never cease furnishing grist for the owning class. that's the logical conclusion of utilitarianism as I see it, and no prospect disgusts me more.

This seriously depends where you live. In my country, most of these STEM subjects are not nearly as good as they are rated here, and the social sciences at the bottom would need to move up quite a bit. A high number of STEMfags in my country end up just being high school teachers. At my highschool we had an Oxford Chemistry graduate, who moved to my country and became a science teacher - most likely because there are almost no science jobs here except some agricultural science.
Education especially is one of the most employable positions at the moment, especially when combined with any of those other "shit tier" and "suicide tier" subjects. Law also should be moved up.

Engineers and other STEM cunts lack the humility and self-awareness to be anything but useful. None of them could become the next Newton or Einstein because they are stuck in a self-serving and self-gratifying idea of objective """"intellect""". The penniacle that they might reach is to make some app or be a cog in NASA, and even then they won't strive to break new ground or to further humanity, they'll resort to cerebral masturbation and reddit-tier "science-bitch!" ceremonial acts. I’m not the guy you’re asking but I can answer since I did economics. I think they’re all garbage and it really doesn’t matter to any important degree to be honest, but economics is truly the worst of all choices. If you do a legitimate program, it’s nearly as hard as a real stem degree without being nearly as real or practical while also being not hard enough to dissuade the masses who are out to make a buck and drive down wages. It’s basically the rigor of stem applied to make believe and speculative scenarios so really, you end up studying nothing of value at all and don’t get the benefits. Not only is the market oversaturated but it leads to the most corporate soul crushing bug jobs imaginable. It’s really the new law degree, but worse because it dresses itself up as stem. What’s worse is it doesn’t even lend itself to further study in anything including economics. All of those stem courses you take, won’t be actual stem courses they’ll be called econometrics or something else so you’ll effectively have a math education without any of the actual math credits and it’s a bit of a running joke in econ grad departments that it’s impossible to get in as an econ undergrad because you don’t have enough math. Lastly, it’s just not worth studying. There’s literally nothing you can do with an econ degree that you couldn’t do better with either math/physics, comp sci, finance, or even politics/philosophy. Maybe at one point departments studied interesting stuff like decision making and political theory and whatnot but nowadays it’s mostly just monetary and fiscal theory approached through a very specific lens or else mathematical government and corporate market speculation. Do you really want to spend your formative years studying the science of corporate speculation? To give you an idea, the only parts of my Econ education I really appreciated are the parts that had very little to do with finance and that’s a very small minority of the degree. I think a lot of people study econ because they want to study sociology, politics, philosophy or other stuff like that but they feel like they need to do it with a mathematical and applicable bend so they do econ and I think that’s a mistake to be honest. I feel like I didn’t really get anything at all out of my degree besides wasted time and maybe a paycheck. I know I’ll get shit on for this reply but that’s my honest opinion.

should be thankful they didnt put it at suicide tier. At least they acknowledged it's only virtue: "It's interesting"

>> No.14970012

Sounds like made-up bullshit, at least with regards to the alleged criteria. For instance, criminology and anthropology are completely useless by this metric and should be in suicide tier. Same goes for Art. Social workers are basically discount psychologists, with lower salary and fewer authorizations, so, if anything, social work should switch positions with psychology. Military really is shit, but not by the alleged metrics, as employment and a decent salary are basically guaranteed. Meanwhile, astrophysics and astronomy are in god/great tier, although they're pretty much the worst fields of physics to get into w/r/t employment and salary. I suspect this goes fore some for the unbelievable tier major too.

>refute utilitarianism

1. Have goal of reducing human suffering.
2. All humans die, some in horrific and painful manners.
3. Thus, the status quo involves every human dying in a method involving human suffering either for them, or for the people around them.
4. Humans reproduce, perpetuating this suffering.
5. Carpet nuking would near infinitely reduce human suffering.
5a. Instant vaporization would be less painful than many deaths that people experience.
5b. There is no one left alive to mourn, further reducing suffering.
5c. The lack of future generations ensures that suffering ends with this generation.
6. As all humans die, the mass death of humanity creates no immediate suffering, while completely removing suffering that comes after a single death.

As you can see, utilitarianism taken to its fullest extent results in the annihilation of humanity. On smaller scales, this is evident through communist purges and the various genocides throughout history, as it was justified through "the betterment of society."

I see what you’re saying but I’m cynical enough by this point that I just want to learn something that makes money. I’ve taken enough philosophy classes to realize I don’t want to study philosophy further in an academic setting since, although I love studying philosophy in my own time, the academic study of it has just become academics talking about shit no one cares about.
