Brahms is probably a reasonably close second, insofar as they’re comparable. He’s probably actually a better exemplar of the tradition that preceded him than Mahler was, and he wrote some exceptionally powerful pieces (Requiem, Symphony 3, Piano Concerto 2), though in my opinion still none that can compare to some late Mahler like Symphony 8 or, especially, Das Lied von der Erde.

Really sucks that COVID-19 is going to close opera houses for so long. I just can't get into Wagner myself. It just doesn't seem anywhere near as gripping as something like Tosca or Don Giovanni. Maybe I've just never come across a good staging of any Wagner online. Does anyone have a good link to a Wagner opera to watch?

You can watch the 1990 Met Opera staging on their website; it's free if you sign up for the 7 day trial, though I haven't watched more than 30 minutes of it myself. I watched the 100 year anniversary production by Pierre Boulez/Patrice Chéreau; it's on youtube in full, though depending on the country you might not have access to Acts I/II of Die Walküre. I didn't, but I was lucky enough to find a russian torrent for it.
