Does anyone have insightful advice as to how one could adequately compose an engaging plot or develop a detailed framework to write within? I think I can be too vague in my own plot creation. I find this constricting. When I begin to question where the story is going, it feels like a guiding light going out in the dark in a bog road.

Furthermore, is it better to separate realism and surrealism or is mixing the two possible? I could answer my own question and say that skill can certainly make it so, but I need apt examples.

What's the premise of your story? (what's behind it all)

What do you character most want?
What are his weaknesses?
Is his fear/weaknesses prejudicing somebody?
What do he needs to overcome his fear and weaknesses?

Is there something/someone opposing him by exploring his weakness?
What happens if the character doesn't get what he wants?

When the story ends, is the character a changed person?
What he learns at the end have something to do with the premise? (This is your theme)

What themes do you want to explore with your story?

What do want to SAY with your story? In other words, what's the message you want your audience to take away from it?

What questions are you trying to answer with your story?

How do you want your story to end, and how will you get there?

Answer these and your story will plot itself.
