After writing Mannfred, Byron was accused of plagiarizing Goethe's Faust. Goethe, in retaliation for alleged plagiarism, accused Byron of hypochondria. In response, Byron claimed that he never read Fast, which I think was a lie.

Nietzsche on Mannfred and Faust:
"I must be profoundly related to Byron's Mannfed: all these abysses found in myself; at the age of thirteen, I was ripe for this work. I have no word, only a glance for those who dare pronounce the word "Faust" in the presence of Mannfred. The Germans are incapable of any notion of greatness.

Interesting.

Both deal with the guilt of the extremely intellectual protagonist who doomed their women, Astarte and Gretchen respectively. I find the idea that Byron did not read Faust before writing Mannfred to be difficult to believe

Also both make deals with the ones from the hell.

Goethe never invented Faust. Faust was a real person.

Mephistopheles wasn't an invention by Goethe either.
Please stop shitting up this board.

how does it relate to the OP's post?

everyone knows that the story of Faust has been around for a long time, but the similarity between Mannfred and Faust is uncanny

what? wasn't the character Euphorion in Faust part II literally a homage from Goethe to Byron, who was already dead and who Goethe admired?

i guess he could still have plagiarized part I, but seems like Goethe quite admired Byron too
