He more or less built his interpretation around the theme of extreme suspicion in the novel, and the notion of cataclysmic event that sparks it off (9/11 etc). I can see how he would come to that sort of conclusion but to my mind it's a woefully inadequate way to treat the text, which I don't believe is concretely American to begin with, and I don't think it contributes to a more fruitful or constructive understanding of that text.

Guys, lets get this thread back on track. D&E has provided us with a platform for discussing what could be some potentially hilarious stories!

When I was in high school one of my more remedial colleagues would continually bring up (to the teachers chagrin) his interpretation of Beowulf-inspired determinism: Fance. The marriage of fate and chance. He would belt it out any time she asked a question regarding the reasoning of characters, or the purpose of any action.

I think he got an F.

It's good. Fowles has a kind of smugness that rubs off on most of the interior monologues he writes, but it can be awfully satisfying to indulge in once in a while, regardless of how flawed they are. Parts of the book are straight-up erotica: Just a warning. I put it in the realm of high-minded thriller, like if you want a satisfying beach read with some philosophical muscle injected into it ala Foucault's Pendulum or Deliverance.

Basically any interpretation of Tolkien.
Every single little shitty journalist has his own interpretation, each one more retarded than the last, and they sell it to the people every time something Tolkien-related happens.

Kinda funny, when Tolkien himself said countless times, that it is not meant as an allegory of anything.
