I'm making a chart.
Must include either:
>Fantastical or supernatural elements
>MC or central character less than 30 years old
>Not too much inner monologue, must have a decent amount of action and a plotline

Lolita isn't really about pedophilia, though.
I wouldn't trust a Japanese studio to get it right. They'd either adapt the book as a sex comedy or completely change the plot, themes, and setting to make HH an otaku instead of a pseudointellectual. It would be a fucking embarrassment either way, imagine the reaction from clickbait journalists.

Pynchon is weirdly perfect for anime. He has said before that his books are supposed to be like mad cap adult comic books.
And, yeah, Dune would also be perfect. Half of that book is characters performing hyper-aware 4D chess mind games in their interior monologues.

Anime films are, in my experience, superior to serialized animes, which tend to be cheap shlock. Bely's Petersburg might work well as a feature-length animated film, as a lot of the more psychedelic and out-there descriptions could be depicted through an artist's pen much more easily than a cinematographer's lens.

Why are you asking if it can be adapted? The question is if it WERE adapted would you feel obligated to watch it. All of Joyce's ouvre should fit in to this category, even that kid's story about the devil and the bridge and the cat. You could not tear your eyes away from an adaptation of Ulysses or Finnegans Wake!

Well we're already halfway there on Emma. I've seen a shoujo manga version of that before at a local comic book chain.

There was also an anime adaptation of Alice in Wonderland in the 80s called Fushigi no Kuni no Alice. Adapting classic western literature into anime was huge in Japan in the 70s and 80s.

Also to answer OP's question, The Witches of Karres. It's even Miyazkki approved, he drew the cover for the Japanese translation!

Oh yeah, Carroll was ahead of his time. Had Alice in Wonderland debuted as an anime, I think it would have a similarly large following. It ticks off all the "otaku" boxes:
-isekai
-cute (young) girl protagonist
-funny animal sidekick
-mildly surreal fantasy
The only thing missing is fanservice!

One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich as an anime film

Blood Meridian as an anime or an HBO mini series

Mein Kampf as a mini series flashing between Hitler's experiences in WW1, his time in Vienna, and culminating with the rally shown in Triumph of the Will, interspersed with text from the book as an inner monologue/animated sequences

Candide as a mini series

Anyway, most epic poetry would probably work out well. In particular, I think Torquato Tasso's Jerusalem Delivered has a couple of scenes, like the trip to centre of the Earth, that would genuinely work better animated than as live action. Then again, the overt Christianity might be an issue, but this is all hypothetical anyway and it's not like it would be the first anime to have Christian symbolism in it. Just the first one for the symbolism to mean something.

its hard to imagine any adaptation of FD that retains much of what makes it enjoyable in the first place (rhyme scheme, multiple ambiguous interpretations of a single sentence/word, wrydply liike thhhis)

>Why are you asking if it can be adapted?
ulysses and several scenes of FW are already adapted by some artists that aren't super well-known. does that make you automatically want to watch all of them and rave about them?

>>14926727
i didn't finish it (as in: i barely read any of it), but taipei felt like a YA novel for mid20s-early30s. it had the vibe of being magic-realism despite the entire thing being very "normal". from what i felt its mostly about mundane social dynamics that a YA might feel (feeling bored at a party, doing drugs with friends), but its handled quite delicately with a lot of acuity in observation.

its mostly a love story from what i've heard. i haven't really watched welcome to the NHK either, but if they could do that well then i can fathom taipei being done well too

I'd love to see an anime adaptation of Plato's dialogues. If they're not anime enough, just gender-bend Socrates' interlocutors and make a harem or something while keeping the dialogue.
