Don't worry, I doubt many of us can appeal to the rules you stated.

Though I am curious as to what literature you revere so dearly. Especially since there's an absence of sci-fi and fantasy.

Tell me more.

1. We do not accept people who believe Americans can write noteworthy literature.
2. Science Fiction and Fantasy lovers are to remain on /b/
3. We are not accepting those who would waste their time rotting their brains with video games.

These are OP's words... Quite a bad first impression of this board, but I'm hoping to find some sci-fi literature discussion or something, maybe not everyone is as elitist as OP seems to be.

It's a really complicated topic and there's no one answer. The first think you have to realize is that there's multiple ways to think about what constitutes fantasy - fantasy is both a genre, a collection of fiction with similar tropes - you know, elves, dragons, vampires, werewolves, whatever. On the other hand, you can also think of fantasy in literary terms - as basically a subset of literature that takes a certain stance towards reality and deals with certain themes. And there's a lot of things in the second category that I would have no qualms about calling literature. Is something like Little, Big 'contemporary fiction'? Absolutely. It's a brilliant book. But it's also clearly fantasy.

So, I suppose, it comes down to the way the book is written, the themes it deals with, the skill with which it is composed.
