You haven't properly read a book unless there is an abundance of notes on literally every page.

I try not to mark up the pages unless it's a really profound thought

Only on philosophy books. Taking notes on fiction is fucking dumb unless you're intending to write a paper or something.

I mostly agree but there are also cases where you might want to mark down an important passage maybe for its significance for the themes of the book or just because you find it interesting or beautiful. also nothing wrong in a rigorous exegesis of a classic

I don't know if taking notes on books is a legally allowed activity

I copy what my father does, he is a literature teacher.

To mark the pages of the book I use a folded sheet of paper. If I have to take notes on something, I just give the page number and write on this sheet instead of the book like:

>p36 Character does this just like that other thing
>p103 Such and such concept

Within the book, if I want to highlight something, I mark a small dot in pencil right next to the initial line of the quote I want to highlight.

This is very interesting, my father has a collection of these papers, one or two for each book he has read. It's very good for studying too. Besides, if I pick any book from his library I find these small dots and I know that line has something interesting, even though I don't know exactly what he found to be so interesting about it. At the same time, it's not intrusive or ugly.

So I'm doing the same and recommend it.

just little ones-- mostly underlining quotes or making quick notes in the margins about themes and characters and things.

Of course, but not in the book I'm reading, I'm not some savage nigger, I write the notes and copy the passages I wish to remember into a notebook.

It's so strange that some people can't associate words with the context they're being presented in

>> No.14878871

Even weirder that the person is too stupid to not just look it up. I can forgive people having a small vocabulary but there's no excuse for not learning a word after you've been confused by it.

I thought it was obvious that this person is just forced to jot down bullshit annotations to meet a quota for a school assignment. It just also happens to be that the person was an idiot too.

Maybe but surely they wouldn't jot down a question but rather what the word means since at least then they'd seem 3% less retarded

The only red ink that ought to grace the pages of a book are the words of the Nazarne, this is an abomination -- very sharp pencils in aesthetic, idiosyncratic script, illuminating the text: this and these only -- so if the volumes do not stay in your family, and are otherwise heinous or without use to the next owner-reader, they are not indelible marring on the text -- (and if they do, guidestones for another mind that will have similar sensibilities, to point them on the way more efficiently). These pen mark pics are disgusting.
