Interestingly, the very first Conan story Howard ever wrote was "The Phoenix on the Sword", even though it takes place very late in Conan's chronological life, long after he's become King of Aquilonia. The timeline of Conan is fuzzy, intentionally so. We know he comes out of Cimmeria at some point, we know he roams the world, we know he eventually conquers Aquilonia and becomes its king. But the exact dates are sketchy, which Howard did on purpose to leave himself room to tell stories however he liked.
