Poetry is the other side of the coin to prose.
Prose is "words put together to advance meaning"
Poetry is "words put together to advance beauty" and in the West that generally used to mean "a song".
It's obviously a spectrum, there's poetric prose and prosaic lyrics, but that's the basics. Metric is a way of organizing your "song lyrics" of poetry in a certain way as for it to sound good regardless of it being put to music or not. Iambic pentameter will feel like five pulses or beats, whilst having ten syllabes, "she SEES the WAY a-ROUND those THINGS i DO" see how certain syllables pop up since they are tonic, they just naturally grab attention to them and that gives the verse a beat.

Songs however don't necessarily need a rigid structure since melodies are not always short enough to repeat every ten syllables. Rhymes generally would give away a melody so you could use them to understand the difference between a strictly metrical poem or one that is not. Compare idk, a Bob Dylan song where the rhymes are always there, to something else. You'll notice that folk songs tend to be very repetitive and the rhymes help it.

Iambic pentameter is short hand for lines of poetry with five beats (accented syllabe) where the words have one unnacented syllabe followed by an accented syllabe
