Why haven't you signed up to be a pen-pal with a prisoner yet, /lit/? Nobody could be more grateful to get a letter than someone that's stuck in a cell all day long. You can work on your penmanship, prose, and make a real difference to someone all at once.

None of us are, but it would really cheer up someone and bring some light to an otherwise bleak life. Just think of the loneliest you've ever felt and multiply it by 1000x. That's what it's like to be incarcerated. They may have done something awful, but they're still human beings.

I don't see why not. As long as you know their prisoner ID you should in theory be able to send a letter to them. If they know english or are able to respond is an entirely different matter.

people under the age of 18 can still rape and murder. it sounds brutal but rehabilitation is often impossible. I personally think it's more human to just kill these people, a life sentence can be much, much worse than a death sentence. It's probably like that 'longer than you think' part of "The Jaunt"

My housemate exchanged letters for a couple of years with a guy who was locked up in Florida, while we live in Bristol (England). In one letter he sent a Bristol Pound note as a curio because it had just been introduced as a local currency, but the letter + money was sent back with a note from the Florida corrections institution or whatever saying that no kind of money could be sent to the prison in the post. I thought this was funny because it would be legal tender only inside Bristol UK (and even then not everywhere), not 10 miles down the road in Bath and certainly not in a foreign country! But I suppose rules are rules. Thank you for reading my blog.
