It should be obvious, if you say "Howard Phillips L. Was better than Clack Ashton Smith" I would know that you're talking about Lovecraft. At least in this context the name C.A. Smith is obvious.
I know that this information is irrelevant, but in the japanese editions of his books his name is written as "C.A. Smith".

I often get the feeling people namedropping Smith/Dunsany/Machen/Blackwood/James/anyone associated with Lovecraft for the sake of diminishing his importance has only just discovered that weird writers other than HPL exist.
