Weber, in good anti-positivist fashion, would never claim that capitalism developed due to solely religious factors and that these factors were necessary in any development of a capitalist society. He’s not interested in positivist cross-case comparison. Instead, Weber’s project is to explain adequate causality that can explain the specific instantiation of (in this case) capitalist development and how it relates to cultural factors. China has its own cultural factors (that are not religious/Christian) that help explain their development of capitalism.

Ferguson’s point is a strawman. Weber never claims that ALL capitalist societies are rooted in religion.
