14782524 No.14782524 [Reply] [Original]

My small but growing collection of books that I'm slowly but surely reading through and digesting. Please rate and offer further reading suggestions.

Also, what's the best method to remember and retain what I've read? Are there any practices that help? My attention span has been fried by years of video games, and the internet.

All the other shit like the subtle art of not giving a fuck and these modern how 2 stoic are a bunch of cringy crap, and you know this.

"The art of not reading is a very important one. It consists in not taking an interest in whatever may be engaging the attention of the general public at any particular time. When some political or ecclesiastical pamphlet, or novel, or poem is making a great commotion, you should remember that he who writes for fools always finds a large public. A precondition for reading good books is not reading bad ones: for life is short." - Schopenhauer

The simplest method is to recite what you've read either out loud or in your head at regular intervals until you've committed it to memory. This is not the same thing as taking notes or repeatedly reading notes. This is taking the time to actually recall information in your head without additional cues. Repetition without recall and recitation is a complete and utter waste time. Recitation is the only memory "trick" you'll ever need.

The reasoning behind my books is I deal with a lot of depression and anxiety most of my life and I've sought answers and guidance through self help books with The Subtle Art of Not Giving A Fuck being one of my earliest purchases in my adult collection. I later discovered Stoicism, and found its philosophy and beliefs in emotional regulation and general life guidance attractive and I ended up buying a bunch. How To Win Friends and Think and Grow Rich were gifts to me from my parents who just want to see me be happy. When Trump became president, buying his book was a no brainer to learn more about him as a person. I've been fascinated with Norse mythology for a while and wanted to learn more, which I plan on expanding on in the future. The Naked Communist was a cool purchase as its an original 2nd edition from the early 60's and it's scary how accurate it still is today. The Rational Male and No More Mr Nice Guy are desu kinda cringe, but I unsurprisingly struggle with woman, my parents are no help, so I've been trying to seek answers and develop myself further as a person. I haven't even touched 12 rules for life and You Mean I'm Not Lazy, Stupid Or Crazy is me trying to find help to manage my ADHD.

I get this is 4chan and people can be nasty, I've been here for a few years and I was expecting some shit, but dammit I didn't expect to get roasted this fucking bad. It sucks.

you seem interested in learning, id suggest starting with pic related, you can skip the liberal arts part and just focus on literature and philosophy for now, but eventually come back to it. there's a more in depth chart on the trivium if you find you like it. also remember, you'll feel burned out at times and some times you'll have to take breaks, but you should never read less than 5 pages of fiction a day and never go more than a week without studying harder stuff no matter how tough life gets.

If you want some relatable /lit/ kafka and dosto should scratch that itch, but depending on how down you feel and your apparent interest in stoics maybe startwiththegreeks.jpg instead.
