And it shows. The book is not bad. The part where the girl hands over the guns is really well written and the ending is good. But the prose is bland. The main character is a retard. The pace is slower than it should have been. There's literally no reason why it had to be an epistolary novel. A novel with that type of premise would have worked much better as (non-epistolary) a first person narrative.
