Here’s the problem. The “gay rights” along with all the other “rights” movements are run by people who wish to define themselves by those said characteristics. On another note, Aleksandr Voinov seems to be the most acceptable male author in the genre. I got used to reading pointless sex scenes in every modern novel I find, but I guess people can't get enough of conflating sex with romance, and the same happens in straight romance novels these days.

A realistic gay "love" story would start with the main character as a kid when he's being raped by an adult gay male, who was also raped as a child, thus continuing the cycle.
Then the boy would start growing up and try to be normal, but the trauma wouldn't allow him to do so.
He would succumb to life of sodomy and lose any chance of fixing his life.
Finally he would get diagnosed with AIDS or colon cancer and die painfully.
