Capitalism, Netflix, porn
I remember when I finished highschool I jumped on a plane and moved to Europe to become the next Hemingway, and instead it was a schlubby society of bitter, pudgy males addicted to porn. Just last week a friend of mine came to visit me in NYC and lit up while talking about how close he was born to Rocco Siffredi. Europe is a giant museum for Americans to gaze at and the people there are simply the ticket-takers. France has more energy than most, and Eastern Europe is actually quite lively at the moment, but don't confuse it with the Europe in fin-de-siecle novels. Houellebecq's critique of the strive for comfort and pleasure and domesticism in the absence of meaning was so fitting.

Sorry any Europeans on here, but it's true. I met one really involved literary type abroad and he was a French-Arab.

No one reads anywhere. It's a niche thing. You'll just have to connect with people over other things.

TL;DR summary. They are dumber than a sack of hammers now because they've amused themselves into complete retardation. Still in a bit of shock hearing that there arent any book clubs in France. Where I am in Ottawa weve got sapophiles galore, lots of clubs and 40+ libraries plus data centers holding the other 90000+ other libraries. Plus a bunch of schools that teach anything. Its the wealth of our people that is shared. The money...well...its pretty much monopoly money. Easier to think of a loonie as a cup of coffee, isnt worth much else.

Maybe you need a change of scene?

I already have some friends, I can do sport and music with them, but that doesn't prevent me from spending too much time on the 4chins boards
For example, it's just too entertaining and easy to chuckle about Guénon memes here than to do the effort to open and read any of his books
I even bought an ereader (Kindle shit) but I use it more on my WC to browse this site than to actually read books

That all depends on whether you're here primarily for some vestige of social interaction, genuine discussion or have such deep-seated insecurity and self-destructive patterns that you simply revel in the harsh words and harsher truths people like to toss about here like daggers into your skin, to the point that leaving for any longer period of time then coming back is like getting struck by a speeding train and you can't even stand still anymore without a phone or computer nearby to see if you fit some anon's description of a miserable bugman, so afraid of the mass of conflicting opinions and constant advice from every party involved that you are no longer able to make any choice but go to sleep each day hoping the terror doesn't return to paralyze you from the instant you are willed awake by the sun, only to realize how delusional that is.
If it's that last one, I'd like to know myself.

Either find a book you really like or Pomodoro Method. Read a book that's good but you don't like so much for 15 minutes, take a 2-3 minute break, then start again for 15 minutes. Do that four times then take a longer break, repeat the process until you've finished the book.

If you havent tried it yet anon I suggest just building your own schedule of other hobbies and slowly removing negative ones like 4chins. I used to be pretty bad and just like the person in that image, but I eventually wanted to better myself and the way I did so was by continuously doing more positive things alongside reading like hiking, exercise, and meditation. Going cold turkey doesnt always work.

Its how they lured the writers out there originally. Tax breaks. Innireland if you are a writer its one of the tax free professions there. As in you dont pay taxes if you write. Places in new england have similar setups except with property taxes and tax credits. Most writers dont make a fortune to begin with so places that want them set it up for them so its a little easier attracting them.

this makes me think you're quite young, probably still a high schooler.
I understand you, I grew up in a very similar environment (rural "backwards" part of Italy) and I felt exactly the same for a long time.
you should cherish your friendships and your little world as much as you can, we are bombarded with adverts of perfection but if you ever manage to move out and experience the beauty of cities or whatever it is you desire now, you'll find out that the relationships and pettiness you feel trapped by are actually beautiful things and you're lucky to have them.
take a moment to realise that the imperfection you're in is actually pleasant. appreciate that smell of cow shit and the early blossoms, and once you find beauty in these things it will be easier for you to realise how silly your bad habits are, and you'll also have the tools to actually make the most of the city when your time comes to live it (because, believe me, if you move to a big city and keep this attitude, you'll hate it).
regarding reading specifically, you could try pomodoro as the other anon suggested if nothing else works, but my first suggestion would be to unplug for a second and enjoy what you've got. without that, most things are painful copes, and you're lucky enough not to deserve that

Im not particularly religious either, but the theological education usually leads them to having read some interesting stuff. Its almost always hit or miss, especially in the US where you can get some really down to earth Pastors and some full on evangelical types. Im from a small village too in New England, and I like to pass through small towns when I get the time since I now work in Boston. I guess the grass is always greener.
