ahem,
>In the year 2452, a young Bruce Knight unhappily joins his family in Emilia City’s temple on the planet Tamashiri where The Mother delivers an impassioned sermon about the Goddess KamaGiri for all of her Children. Bruce, a young disabled outcast, grows up with the struggles of culturally accentuated bullying from both wopeeps, (Earth 2020 translation: females) and his fellow mepeeps, (Earth 2020 translation: males). But this already disenfranchised youth is too young to understand that he should’ve been thrown off the Cliff of Yeet after he was born for his circumstances; instead he finds himself living in a city that already hates him for existing before he’s old enough to understand why.

>Emilia City belongs to the wopeeps. Otherwise known as The Reds, they are self-proclaimed true Descendants of the Goddess KamaGiri whom believe themselves made in her image during the Re-Birthing. Young Bruce quickly learns that mepeeps have the divine honour of serving wopeeps should they deign to allow them during the yearly hallowed Reflection Ceremonies, that is if they’re lucky. For wopeeps are the better of mepeeps in every way, some even have Goddess-like powers. Bruce’s mother Serenity is by her own claim a powerful wopeep, who rarely treats him to anything other than her dominant aggression as is a wopeep’s right. Together with his father, the maligned and meek Chronicler Jonathan, Serenity Knight will forge Bruce into a weapon or kill him trying. And all for a war only she seems convinced is coming… A war with the Mottled, or Mots: a mysterious faction of hulking beings whom she believes will kill them all in their quest to seize the Sacred Goddess statue. Thereby proving themselves the true Descendants once and for all. Will Bruce survive the chaos brewing in the political maelstrom of his world, or will the many trials of his mysterious destiny and a potential war not of his making destroy him?

Without more ado the King stepped into the wrastling ground on his side, and Goldry Bluszco on his, and they cast aside their rich mantles and stood forth naked for the wrastling. And folk stood silent for admiration of the thews and sinews of those twain, doubting which were mightier of build and likelier to gain the victory. The King stood taller by a little, and was longer in the arm than Goldry. But the great frame of Goldry showed excellent proportions, each part wedded to each as in the body of a God, and if either were brawnier of chest it was he, and he was thicker of neck than the King.

Now the King mocked Goldry, saying, "Rebellious hound, it is fit that I make demonstration unto thee, and unto these Foliots and Demons that witness our meeting, that I am thy King and Lord not by virtue only of this my crown of Witchland, which I thus put by for an hour, but even by the power of my body over thine and by my might and main. Be satisfied that I will not have done with thee until I have taken away thy life, and sent thy soul squealing bodiless into the unknown. And thy skull and thy marrow-bones will I have away to Carcë, to my palace, to be a token unto all the world that I have been the bane of an hundredth great champion by my wrastling, and thou not least among them that I have slain in that exercise. Thereafter, when I have eaten and drunken and made merry in my royal palace at Carcë, I will sail with my armies over the teeming deep to many-mountained Demonland. And it shall be my footstool, and these other Demons the slaves of me, yea, and the slaves of my slaves."

But the Lord Goldry Bluszco laughed lightly and said to the Red Foliot, "O Red Foliot, I am not come hither to contend with the King of Witchland in windy railing, but to match my strength against his, sinew against sinew."

Now they stood ready, and the Red Foliot made a sign with his hand, and the cymbals clashed for the first bout.

How did you extrapolate that? I've only read a book and a half of the saga but the magic system is three-fold:

1. cards - opened up like a Tarot would, but with discernible effects and strong I-Ching sense of fatefulness
2. warrens - reality tunnels and shortcuts, done better than in WoT
3. (stemming from second) - tons of minute gods, demons and non-human miscreants, a bit Greeky; don't like it too much.

Anyway, I like that each magician has a deck, reminds me of that board game, Seasons

Gene Wolfe? Yes.
"Ursula K. Le Guin is frequently quoted on the jackets of Wolfe's books as having said 'Wolfe is our Melville.'
Critic and science fiction writer Harlan Ellison, reviewing The Shadow of the Torturer, wrote: 'Gene Wolfe is engaged in the holy chore of writing every other author under the table. He is no less than one of the finest, most original writers in the world today. His work is singular, hypnotizing, startlingly above comparison. The Shadow of the Torturer breaks new ground in American literature and, as the first novel of a tetralogy, casts a fierce light on what will certainly be a lodestone landmark, his most stunning work to date. It is often said, but never more surely than this time: This book is not to be missed at peril of one's intellectual enrichment.'"

I've read a lot of questionable "epic" fantasy. For example, Dragonlance, Wheel of Time, and The Sword of Truth. I'm looking for shorter, more literary book recommendations if you have them. Is there anything like this? Or is most of fantasy just filled with time wasting Tolkien fan-fiction?

I've browsed the charts, and I'm currently waiting on The Book of The New Sun if that gives you an idea. I just need a change and I keep thinking I've obviously missed something great that I should have read by now.

Who recommended this to me? Yikes, bro. This is really hard to get into. I never struggled this hard to get into a book before. I'm only on chapter 13, but it's rough. I had to go back over a few chapters, because I completely forgot what happened. When does it get good?

Ceda is boring. Her motivation is boring. Her friend is boring. Her lover is boring. They keep referring to these kings and how awful they are, but I have no reason to care about them, other than Ceda's desire for revenge.

Also, I might be thinking too much about what was implied. But some of the foreshadowing was too heavy handed, and I have a pretty good idea about what "surprises" are coming. Except it's probably going to take forever to get there.

I don't know what to do. I kind of what to continue to see if it gets better. But like I said, it's such a struggle.

ok, I'm trying A Memory Called Empire.
Coincidentally, this will be my fourth book in a row with a female protagonist.(Not counting Malazan) And I hope this one is better than the others. Because so far, it hasn't been going well.

1. Book of the Ancestor. Was a pretty mediocre start, but kept me strung along until book 2 where it found its legs and got good. But still, it wasn't the best.
2. Borne. Frustrating, because it has the potential to be good, but never reaches it. Disappointing.
3. Song of Shattered Sands. Failed to hook me at all.

Now, you might be reading this with the idea that I'm alluding to the sex of the protagonist being the problem. Actually, no. I'm wondering if the sex of the AUTHOR is the issue here. The common denominator between all three books, is that the author is male, writing a female protag. And as it happens, the problem with all three of these books, is that I wasn't invested well enough into the characters. Again. Book of the Ancestor improved over time. But that seems to be a common problem among this male author/female protag configuration.

I see that A Memory Called Empire is written by a woman, about a woman. So it will be interesting to see if the characterization is any better.

There's always going to be a lot of drop off after the first books and very few are going to look at what you've written aside from your Big Series usually. Even if you try to write other stuff, it will never even begin to compare to what you're really known for. The brand is so much more powerful that even someone else writing your series as a cash grab a decade later will still eclipse anything else you try to do and most other books in general.

I read that when it was released. It's completely different from the Harry Potter series, dealing with mature topics like milfs wanting sturdy young cock, infidelity, public office and what would be done to get into them, etc. The divide was too great for the autists who walk around in Hogwarts robes to make the jump. The book had absolutely no magic. I think Rowling wanted to see if she could be a serious author.

People that started the Harry Potter series when they were already adults, or people that weren't autists who tried to live through Harry Potter had an easier time switching to the casual vacancy. I liked it, even though it was non fiction. You should have seen the rage and tears from autists who picked up the book without reading the blurb, thinking that all Rowling will write is going to be about some shota going to magic school. It was delicious. I never was nourished like that since then. I guess if that happened today instead of back then they would have tried to cancel Rowling.

Where do I go next with the classics in SFF?

Read and liked everything I have read from the following over the years: PKDick, Asimov (Robots/Foundation), Gibson (Neuromancer), Tolkien, LeGuin ('Hainish'), Verne, Wells, Peake, Zelazny, Wolfe (BoTNS, shorts) and Herbert. As far as more modern, I've recently read and enjoyed Glen Cook, Bakker, Abercrombie.

Didn't much enjoy Heinlein's 'Stranger', Vonnegut's 'Slaughthouse 5' or Clarke's 'Childhood's End' for some reason, maybe just the tone of the messaging, especially in the first two. And as much as I love 1984/BNW I didn't find Farenheit 451 to be as interesting. Ringworld didn't do it for me, and could never get into Adams' Hitchhiker stuff or Hyperion, maybe just the way the stories are told.

What glaring gaps do I have here? Not really after 'modern' stuff, more pre-70s or 80s classics with influence. Mostly just trying to make sure I've given a fair shot to the most influential SFF out there.

Cheers. Canticle for Liebowitz is one I have always meant to read but seem to constantly forget to do so, I think mainly because the author only wrote the one book so it doesn't appear mentioned as much as the other big greats. Speaking of, is the posthumously finished sequel to Canticle worth reading? Where on a scale of Tolkien-to-Herbert is it as a posthumous release?

The Stars my Destination is one I have never looked into, but it sounds awesome at a glance. Very proto-cyberpunk almost, but more overtly in space, and I'm a sucker for a hard revenge story. Does Alfred Bester have anything else worth reading?

Also, Samuel Delany I see mentioned a lot but I could not enjoy at all 'Dhalgren', is Nova or his other works any better? I remember it just seeming so self indulgent and irritating, like a Heinlein but worse.

I meant that the posthumous releases treatment Tolkien got was pretty great from his son, while Herbert's series just got more and more diluted and shit on by his. Although it looks like Canticle was a finished book based on the author's manuscript for a sequel so might be decent.

I'm also probably going to re-read Hyperion and the Fall of Hyperion sequel because I hear so many people say they should be read as a pair and it makes the reading better as a whole, but what is the overall thought on Endymion, is it extra good stuff like the 5th and 6th Dune books, or unnecessary gunk?

Biggest gaps I see are Sturgeon (fun fact: he was the basis for Kilgore Trout) and Silverberg. They were both important, prolific, and worth reading. I'd start with More than Human (although Sturgeon was best at short stories) and Dying Inside.

Other than that, I saw you didn't like Dahlgren, but Delany's Triton is fantastic. Also, Robert Sheckley has mostly faded into obscurity, but he has some great stuff and was an important precursor to writers like Douglas Adams.

As much as I dislike the covers and spines (funnily enough I have the newer set of Asimov robot/foundation paperbacks that look similar but I do enjoy) I think I'm going to have to make do with a lot of those SF Masterworks releases, I never realised there was just so much there that isn't in print elsewhere. I had recently found old prints of Zelazny and others (only otherwise available via massmarket or godawful iBooks prints) on eBay, I don't know how I missed theirs.

What is the quality like of their paper, layouts, etc? I have one SF Masterworks release for my kindle and it's fine, but no where near me has the physical versions which is what I would be interested in.

honestly, I don't consume a lot of zombie fiction, but I just re-read This Book Is Full Of Spiders, and for a zombie book that's pure fantasy – and comedic fantasy at that – It has some of the best scientific analyses of zombies I've ever seen. The trick is It's a sociological dissection rather than an epidemiological one. It not only addresses the role and symbolism of zombies in pop culture, but heavily implies the villains engineered the virus to be zombie-like and intentionally followed a whole bunch of zombie tropes just so they could use zombie apocalypse psychology to control the masses

Like why can't the hero just ever slay 100 orcs by his existing training and weapons alone. Why does he suddenly need to unearth some magical orc slaying amulet or suddenly unlock super sayian mode. I think they're a good way to experience a story, provided that the voice actor is on point. A good VA is able to put a lot of emotion into their lines and make conversations between different characters sound natural despite the fact that it's one guy talking to himself in a studio.
The main drawback though is that you may occasionally find it hard to follow certain things if the VA is using the same/similar voices for different characters, or if you were momentarily distracted by something and missed a line. The latter is more of a problem for me though because I am obviously paying attention to the road while I'm listening.
The production value behind the audiobook can really make or break it though. Black Library (the company that produces the wh40k books) does an excellent job. On the flip side, I had the misfortune of listening to and old audio version of "Excession" from the Culture series and it was read by a VA that sounded like he had emphysema or something. Really not fun to listen to at all.
