Hi /lit/, it's my first post here so be gentle. I came to try and find a fast-moving board now /r9k/'s gone.
Today my copy of House of Leaves came in the post. I don't really know anything about the book other than that it's typeset in a really weird way. As such my only expectation is that "it might be shit but I'll give it a go".
Any advice you would offer me about reading it - how to approach the weird text, or anything else?

The only thing you need to know is having a mirror nearby helps. Otherwise, go in with a clear mind.

Just go with your gut. I read it like a normal book mostly, but if I needed to jump around a bit (there are some appendices near the end) or if I just need to skim through the loads of useless and extraneous information around the edges, I would. Just read it how you want to. There is no right way.

Just run at it full blast. It's a fun ride whatever way you go at it.

It's young adult fiction. Don't expect a lot from it.

Why is every fucking trip on this board gay?

Jesus, you all are like the same, faggy, self-aggrandising moron broken up into 40 different trips.

What's so gay about two men hugging in bed?

I thought /lit/ hated House of Leaves?
I found it very interesting, I was pretty obsessed with it for a while.

If you want to hang out on /lit/, that's cool man. You can even use your trip if you want.

Can you at least talk about literature, though, please? We'd really appreciate it.

I do discuss literature plenty. I also like to have fun. I'm sorry, really, I'll get back to the interesting threads now... oh wait, there aren't any.
I'll fix it. I promise.

House of Leaves was one of my first experimental literature experiences (probably most people's). It's fascinating though, and it really deserves all the hype it warranted; it's got a good deal of dark humor, stream of consciousness, it's an epistolary, and throws around sub stories and concepts, mathematics and mythology that distract the main plot but occupy the reader in a strangely relevant fashion

also check out the Whalestoe letters if you're interested, but I won't spoil its significance to the story.
