I read it without reading Skelter and I feel like I didn't miss much at all; he did such a good job summarizing what Bugliosi claimed, tearing it apart, and repeat.

I really don't like reading books as a prerequisite to other books so I just jumped right in. Especially knowing that the narrative I was going to be fed was bullshit

>For the last sixty years, the CIA has managed to maintain a formidable reputation in spite of its terrible record, burying its blunders in top-secret archives. Its mission was to know the world. When it did not succeed, it set out to change the world. Its failures have handed us, in the words of President Eisenhower, “a legacy of ashes.”

>Now Pulitzer Prize–winning author Tim Weiner offers the first definitive history of the CIA—and everything is on the record. LEGACY OF ASHES is based on more than 50,000 documents, primarily from the archives of the CIA itself, and hundreds of interviews with CIA veterans, including ten Directors of Central Intelligence. It takes the CIA from its creation after World War II, through its battles in the cold war and the war on terror, to its near-collapse after September 11th, 2001.

>Tim Weiner’s past work on the CIA and American intelligence was hailed as “impressively reported” and “immensely entertaining” in The New York Times.

>The Wall Street Journal called it “truly extraordinary . . . the best book ever written on a case of espionage.” Here is the hidden history of the CIA: why eleven presidents and three generations of CIA officers have been unable to understand the world; why nearly every CIA director has left the agency in worse shape than he found it; and how these failures have profoundly jeopardized our national security.

i gotta disagree, helter skelter is well worth reading even if the motive was bullshit. you're missing out on how manson's defense attorney kanarek basically carries the trial, how the defendants put up antics in the court room, how a tv news crew finds evidence before the cops, how manson messed with a biker gang stealing a sword from their leader, or the interesting apocalyptic interpretation of the beatles white album/bible. heck i finished helter skelter with the impression that manson was really a hero like joker and bugliosi an anti-hero batman. i'd really recommend reading helter before CHAOS but helter is still a really fun read otherwise to get a sense for the larger than life character manson was that the other books and documentaries don't get

So we're all in agreement the CIA should be abolished and each and every agent and former director should be tortured to death, right?

>> No.14721796

Well, the CIA was literally founded by trust fund kids and stock traders and bankers so even if the CIA was dismantled, new groups would just take their place but we wouldn't know about them. It would be better to abolish millionaires.

Those are the asset grunts. All the officers and managers come from the same inbred families going to the same ivy league schools and hired by the same wallstreet hedge fund groups. The FBI hates them for being snobs.

This. The author sounds like he is pushing an agenda, but IDK what it is, so I guess just read it with a grain of salt.

The Craft of Intelligence (Allen Dulles). IDK about you but I have a hard time wrapping my brain around the everyday scheming that intelligence agencies take for granted, and this is a good intro.

William F. Buckley's Blackford Oakes novels have a ton of cool details about Cold War spying. Like how the KGB smuggled out Ivy League yearbooks so they could watch for the faces on the street. Unfortunately it is mixed up with dry Buckley writing and weird shit like the villain fucking his girlfriend in Hitler's abandoned canopy bed with a giant swastika on the headboard. If you can make it through, more power to you I guess.

John Le Carré novels are a mixed bag. My favorites are The Tailor of Panama and The Russia House.

Keep in mind that a lot of the criticism you hear is either outright propaganda, sour grapes (e.g. The Good Shepherd), or mall ninja rambling.
