ok, I've already read (in chronological order):
>The Idiot
>Notes from Underground
>The Double
>The Brothers Karamazov
>The Gambler
>Poor Folk
>Demons
>Netochka Nezvanova
>The Eternal Husband
>The Village of Stepanchikovo
>many short stories, as well (Bobok, A Gentle Creature, The Dream of a Ridiculous Man, etc.)

Should I:
>keep the joke going and go for The Adolescent
or
>fuck off, just read Crime and Punishment dumb fuck

Well tell us your opinion about those books you've read Anon. Don't spare the details I'm honestly curious.

>> No.14703549

Why would you ruin this absolute mad-ladery: The Adolescent

>> No.14703563

depends on which Dostoyevski you liked, the Young one or the One that went through the hell that was the Tsarist Gulag. I loved Crime and Punishment, but haven't read the Adolescent.

They were both written after he was put through the gulag...

The Gambler was a dumb book, why didn't Alexei keep the money and settle down in a bit nice datcha with a trad qt wife? It makes no sense.

quick reviews for some of them:

>The Idiot
>Notes from Underground
read when I was 15/16, but liked a lot. should revisit.

>The Double
didn't like as much, but still a pretty good book. maybe would appreciate more now.

>The Brothers Karamazov
just perfect. 10/10

>The Gambler
>The Eternal Husband
extremely fun. laughed a lot.

>Demons
maybe my favorite one, but that's due to the subject. wouldn't recommend it for people who aren't somewhat familiar with the period, though.

>Netochka Nezvanova
',:-)

thanks anon, I won't.

I'm also considering House of the Dead.

My advice is read something less fucking depressing. How is it helping you succeed in life?

I read Crime and Punishment as a teenager, it was okay, but I don't think it's an essential read.

Read books that are positive and life-affirming. They will improve your life for the better.

Great story/description of prison life in Siberia and in general. Quick read, too.

>Dostoyevsky
>depressing
I really don't get that! yes, the plot is usually sad overall, but who cares? can't you purely appreciate a work of art by how insanely well done it is? I find that in the end I take way more joy by reading such works than any sadness the plot may provoke on me.

moreover, I find Dostoyevsky extremely funny, and I know I'm not the only one.

I'm really into the Kolima Tales (read half of them so far), so I think it should be really interesting to see how Siberia was before Stalin.

Fair enough. The only book of his I read was Crime and Punishment. It was good I guess, it makes you think about the consequences of crime, even if you think it's justified.

But yeah it was just pretty depressing. That's probably why I haven't read any of his other books.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

>quite literally SEETHING because i speak the truth
Pure s.o.y. Now go back to your cuck cage and go read something "deep and mysterious" while you seethe that every dude is getting chicks and you're not.

>>14705150
Yeah, well it's true. Turns out parents have had a lot of life experience and they've got some good advice. When you get a bit older like me, you'll realise that too.

Crime and Punishment is an insult to Russian literature and it is popular only becase English translation is better than the original. Also it might be that my school teacher just gave me aversion to this novel, I dunno. His other books are good as fuck though. Read Lermontov's "A Hero of Our Time" if you want to keep up the meme, although it has the edgiest main hero I've ever seen in a book.
