I teach a variety of undergrad courses (some more interesting than others), though I have taught an Arthurian course and 3rd-year medieval before. It's difficult to single out just one great lesson from the period's literature: it tracks the formation of our institutions of faith, government, philosophy, thought, art, love, history, etc. Overall, it's the creation of modern humanity: the various interplays of religious, secular, chivalric, political, ribald, and dramatic elements give the period’s texts a unique and vital complexity.

thanks for the answer, anon. i'm inclined to agree. i'm interested myself in our laws, what we inherited from the medievals re: divine right of kings and what rights the peasants took for themselves from the majesty and beneficence of God. the cultural stuff is nice but informed by a great deal of other influences, not the least of them being war and trade with arabs and the orient. but our system of laws is something that we made almost wholly in europe, minus the foundational ethics of scripture and Church tradition.

I agree, as far as my knowledge extends in that field. The European evolution of law is a fascinating process, but for me it's part of the manifold socio-political, moral and philosophical ideas of the medieval period (i.e., the notions of chivalry, knighthood, courtly love) that all bear on the question of how the medieval mind experienced life, and how it differs from modern perspectives (an endless and ongoing scholarly debate).

Currently reading an old radar circuit analysis manual from the 50s along with some old maths, and EE books that are fun comparing to newer works. The esoteric stuff will usually cost more along with collectibles, but that should be expected. I haven't read the Arendt but it is something I always look at with curiosity so I keep it at the front. But frankly there's a few more biographies and histories of 20th century Russia/Germany/China I'd like to read before I make my way around to it. I need a good bio on Mao and I'm waiting for the third volume of Kotkin's very extensive bio of Stalin to be finished, though I've already read the first two (they're buried behind the Everyman's line-up).

it's OK, a bit shallow (i think the translation might not be doing the actual ideas justice because it seems like varg's english is not that good, and marie doesn't speak english at all afaik), and there are points in there where it seems like the placenta symbolism is actually feasible. that said varg/marie are basically secular jungians like mcnallen which fundamentally limits their scope.
there is unironically nothing wrong with culture of critique, it's a level-headed analysis of a handful of influential jewish movements with tons of facts/citations per paragraph. i don't agree with all of his conclusions but it's an extremely dense collection of facts without equal on the subject.
