I don't get it. Can someone explain the whole thing to me, using a food analogy?

your mind is a piece of chocolate, the world is a glass of warm milk. the chocolate enters the milk and melts into it, creating a milk chocolate mixture. This mixture later cools and your mind is now milk chocolate.

imagine your extended family is over for thanksgiving

the book is you explaining to them how pumpkins are both fruits and vegetables, but your babbling because you drank a bottle of nyquil

You can see the orange and want to eat it but it came with a few additional extras. Bundled with the fruit was a collection of machinery of such vast and unhindered complexity that it was like wandering into some dystopian sci-fi epic. There is a machine that hums and glows with a faint light that stretches right up to the sky and another machine that appears to be able to create oranges straight from the quantum foam using a laser the size of a skyscraper. You drive for hundreds of miles in all directions but the machines only seem to increase in complexity.

After weeks you encounter a strange man and a young student sitting in the ruins of a machine the size of a city. The man's beard stretches off into the distance and the student questions him eagerly.

"Why don't we make a machine that can go back in time and feed an Orange to someone" - the student pauses, he looks contemplative, "before they even know they want an Orange?"

"tried that back in 79'" relies the old man, "you young-uns need to catch up"

when you eat an apple it turns into shit. there is nothing about the apple in the shit, nor shit in the apple, but we can understand them as the same substance. since substance can both be an apple and not be an apple, it would seem it violates logic. but this is what time does, it allows substance to become other than itself. this means "pure being" is nothing, it is negativity, as it must be to support it both being and not being an apple. this pure negativity is subjectivity, and the stages than consciousness goes through (the becoming of substance) is digestion. absolute knowing is shit

Your food is going to be there when you look somewhere else. I don't remember the rest but it works it's way up into into the doctrine of being which is covered in the science of logic.

>(Sup.) Thurs., Oct. 18.
>Hegel is here, whom Goethe personally esteems very highly, though he does not much relish some of the fruits produced by his philosophy. Goethe gave a tea-party in honour of him this evening, at which Zelter was also present, who intended to take his departure again to-night.

>A great deal was said about Hamann, with respect to whom Hegel was chief spokesman, displaying a deep insight into this extraordinary mind, such as could only have arisen from a most earnest and scrupulous study of the subject.

>The discourse then turned upon the nature of dialectics. “They are, in fact,” said Hegel, “nothing more than the regulated, methodically-cultivated spirit of contradiction which is innate in all men, and which shows itself great as a talent in the distinction between the true and the false.”

>“Let us only hope,” interposed Goethe, “that these intellectual arts and dexterities are not frequently misused, and employed to make the false true, and the true false.”

>“That certainly happens,” returned Hegel; “but only with people who are mentally diseased.”

>“I therefore congratulate myself,” said Goethe, “upon the study of nature, which preserves me from such a disease. For here we have to deal with the infinitely and eternally true, which throws off as incapable every one who does not proceed purely and honestly with the treatment and observation of his subject. I am also certain that many a dialectic disease would find a wholesome remedy in the study of nature.”

As someone who does understand Hegel, it's hilarious to me how these threads always go exactly the same. If for once I saw a glimmer of hope for this board, I might be tempted to explain it to you all, but in the five years I can remember being on this board, I don't recall a single decent post. In fact, if there had been something along those lines, I'm sure it would've been capped long ago. It's also interesting how I rarely see useful caps of any posts on /lit/ nowadays...

The apple is just a collections of atoms - your body is just breaking down the arrangement into something else. Nothing has fundamentally changed, the atoms are still the same coming out as they are going in, obviously plus or minus other atoms from digestive biological processes.

If a woman rubs her clitoris and its menstrual fluids onto a taco that you are going to then eat unknowingly, either as a prank or due to sexual attraction, or both, and you then eat said taco; is this merely yet a taco, or if not, is this a taco taco? What we can deduce accurately, to be sure, is that it is not a fish taco, because that is a separate extant concept entirely its own, independently of this premise - a definition as literal as to refute colloquiality on principle. Purely there must be an adequate distinction between the variable and an otherwise unfettered taco; what you make of this taco, and what is whereupon unrefuted - this is the dialectic
