Your secret defamation bites and destroys the character of a neighbour. They who indulge in the vice of detraction are chastised not only in the next, but also in. this life, because their uncharitable tongues are the cause of a thousand sins, by creating discord in whole families and entire villages. Thomas Cantaprensis (Apum, etc., cap. xxxvii.) relates, that he knew a certain detractor, who at the end of life became raging mad, and died lacerating his tongue with his teeth. The tongue of another detractor, who was going to speak ill of St. Malachy, instantly swelled and was filled with worms. And, after seven days, the unhappy man died miserably.

also just say "sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me!" in your head. i do it all the time. also doing something like this (bad talking another person while the person is not present) is sinful. you should point this out to them, maybe they just dont know any better. but if they know better then like that other anon said be stoic while keeping in mind that god will judge them.

This shouldn't happen if you work in a large enough organization and keep to yourself. I doubt most of my co-workers even know my name let alone care enough to talk about me behind my back

Ignore it entirely. Behave appropriately. Complete your responsibilities well and try to do a little extra to help out other co-workers whether or not they are the ones that were talking about you. Do all this consistently.

A good manager will ignore rumors and focus on your ability to complete tasks. If you don't have a good manager, find a new job. No interaction possible with your manager will change them from a bad manager to a good manager.

If the lies of this person become pervasive and affect others' impression of you, remind yourself that the lied to are not the issue; the liar is. Prove to those who were lied to that you are not what the lie is. The liar will be exposed infront of all those they lied to. It may seem unfair that you have to prove anything at all, but once you realize this will only hurt the liar in the end, it is worth it.
