Smug assholes. I hate fucking pricks who think it's so great because they are smug and condescending assholes to everyone.

Last week I saw my ex-girlfriend and she was with her boyfriend. I said hi to her to be polite so I wouldn't come across as a creepy asshole. She was nice and said hi, but this fucktard said, "So this is your ex who goes to community college." The way he said community college was with an obvious hint at his disdain he held for me. What a fucking asshole. My gf looked embarrassed by his behavior, so I let it go and then went on my way.

i go to community college and i've had a few professors who also teach at universities as well that tell us that the courses are pretty much the same except you pay about 10 times more and for the university level classes, so don't trip cuz he is paying a lot more for the same shit your getting.

I go to community college as well, and it can bite at your self-esteem when someone your age takes a quip at you for it. I'm mainly going because it's close to home and because I'm paying out of my pocket. I was accepeted to both OSU and OU, but I didn't want to be in debt due to student loans, and I wasn't confident enough in my high school performance to apply for any scholarships when I was younger (Yes, I understand that this was stupid).

Fitzgerald and Fagles are great translations and accurate in tone and content.

Lombardo is also a fantastic translation. His tone has been criticized as not regal, archaic, or noble enough, but I think it's a nice touch for a book like the Odyssey. Odysseus sounds like a guy who has been at war for 10 years, then pissed on by the gods for another 10. He left his home, new wife, and baby when he was a teenager. He is wily, witty, angry, and tired. Lombardo's translation reflects this better than any others, at the expense of the formal, stuffy language you'd expect of such a classic.

He tries for hexamater but not dactyls. His lines are really long, his language is really formal. It doesn't read like poetry to most eyes.

The debate is over what type of effect you want when reading The Odyssey (or The Iliad, for that matter): do you want to have the same sort of experience Ancient Greeks would have? Do you want to experience the story like a modern novel? Do you want to read it like contemporary poetry?

The different translations are all trying to achieve different ends.
