So, from what I've read, American literature is trash
>oh, but Taiga, what have you read?
Vonnegut, Salinger, McCarthy, Fitzgerald, Sherwood Anderson, Twain, Raymond Carver, Bukowski, Steinbeck, Harper Lee, Nathanial Hawthorne, Kerouk, Ayn Rand, and L. Frank Baum.
>oh well then you don't have any tastes herp derp
Anyways, American literature has been quite disappointing, same with classical music (hurr durr ragtime, hurr durr stars and stripes forever). Though, I can't claim to have read all American Literature, so I'm going to give the nation one last chance.

Recommend me some good ol' American literature and I'll give it a *chance*.

Anyways, going to take a nap now.

The way she talks about someone else
That she don't even know herself
She's the sickest thing in this world
Well, look at that stupid girl

Well, I'm sick and tired
And I really have my doubts
I've tried and tried
But it never really works out

Like a lady in waiting to a virgin queen
Look at that stupid girl
She bitches 'bout things that she's never seen
Look at that stupid girl

It doesn't matter if she dyes her hair
Or the color of the shoes she wears
She's the worst thing in this world
Well, look at that stupid girl

about 10% of anime accomplishes that, which is true in just about every medium.

Literature has been around longer, so there is a greater number of reputable content that is recognized over time.
Anime, however, requires a bit of sifting-through in order to reach a smaller number of gems.

anime is more entertaining imo, though.

I follow anime only in a very abstracted and distant way, but it does seem to me that anime fandom is basically concerned largely with the most fucking terrible things to the exclusion of anything good. And that seems kind of shameful & a bad thing.

>> No.1463734

To be honest I mostly try to ignore the fandom and just pay attention to the more talented and creative directors in the industry right now e.g. Masaaki Yuasa, Hiroyuki Imaishi, Mamoru Hosoda, though my favorite of all time is Isao Takahata (he is a master)

>> No.1463742

I'm someone who has been through an involved phase with anime. Really, from my admittedly limited experience, it's analogous to American television and movies; the large majority of anime is an entertainment product. However, you have your exceptions. There are David Lynchs and there are Micheal Bays. The ratio of entertainment merit to art merit is about the same.

>> No.1463744

>>1463742
Yeah, but I feel like... in American television, there's places I can go and talk about movies and television where people will like Michael Bay for being Michael Bay and enjoy his movies for being stupid shit. And people will like David Lynch for being David Lynch. And people will see that some stuff is just bad and ignore it. But it seems that in anime fandom there's only a bunch of people who like a bunch of Michael Bay stuff and a bunch of bad stuff and take it really seriously. Like, I really think that I would be more into anime if there were a more reasonable fandom culture that had higher standards.

>> No.1463747

>>1463744
I'd say that's a pretty accurate assessment, though, interestingly enough, Roger Ebert and a few other critics have given some attention to anime released here in the west. (Ebert on Ponyo.)

I think it has to do in some way with the fact that Anime is an imported phenomena. I'm not sure exactly how though.

>> No.1463753

>>1463747
>I think it has to do in some way with the fact that Anime is an imported phenomena. I'm not sure exactly how though.

I think it might have something to do with the fact that for a really long time it was hard to get anime here and so whatever one managed to get assumed a kind of importance, and that kind of attitude has carried over to here.

but realistically, I think it has more to do with the nature of the internet and anime fandom in japan - anime is an Internet Thing, and anime fandom has basically taken some bad stuff from Japanese anime fandom and then added its own brand of terrible. The Internet just reinforces bad things in anime fandom I think.
