I want to gift my friend a book for his birthday, I have nothing in mind. The problem is that he reads hardly anything and is not interested in any particular subject. He is engineer btw.

Why would you give him a book if he doesn't like reading? If you wanted to get him into reading, you should probably give him some very easy literature with a clear point, and anyone who reads gets something out of. You could give him something like 1984, Enders game, Lord of the Rings, but I'm not sure he'd read it.
