Very true. My last job had me dealing with devout Christians of different denominations. Since I enjoy reading I would mention Dostoevsky and nearly all of them said he was trash.

They loved Tolkien and CS Lewis though.

Can confirm. When I was new to my workplace after a couple lunch hours of talking about our interests I simply brought up reading and named a few authors or books I particularly enjoyed, Crime and Punishment being one of my tops. He came to my cubicle not long after and said that I see you as an intellectual and would like to do a book club with you, I at the time was downright enthused and I asked if he had any suggestions. He said suggested 'Mere Christianity' by CS Lewis, and I didn't really think much of it. A couple days later he asked if I had ordered it and I said no, and he handed me a copy he bought. It was very nice of him and I told him he didn't have to do that but he said that he had a few laying around because he has used this same book for a book club 6+ times... It has been a few months and I've picked it up to entertain and challenge what's written and frankly I think this the worst 'philosophical' work that I've ever read. It has been front confronting my Evangelical savior with statements akin to "Well I reject God for my independence and I view Satan as reclaiming consciousness and as a force of will over the world that we are presented". Not word for word of course but rather tackling metaphysics. I think he has only experienced those with the same questions a Sunday school child would have.

Is high IQ necessary to be a successful artist? To me, the artist is someone who, through whichever circumstances, became witness to an integral element of human condition and has enough sensibility to transcribe it for others. Clearly artistry requires some baseline of intellect like any other complex skill, but I don't think your ability to solve differential equations is gonna be very helpful in writing a story of a man's struggle.

Even if that was due to natural inclinations rather than education, being bad at mathematics doesn't make you stupid. Rarely is there a generalist genius. Originally, the use of the world genius didn't have that connotation. Great musicians, mathematicians, sculptors, philosophers, and charismatic leaders were said to have a kind of genius of their own.
And we can understand this through neuroscience, to a degree. Different parts of the brain govern different parts of our experience and action. There's certain areas, like the Broca area and the parietal lobe, associated with language processing and reasoning. Others with spatial processing or reasoning. Not to mention how the rest of nervous system, etc. governs different actions. And I would guess this is why some people are exceptional at reasoning/processing facts and information from words and text, while others do well at reasoning through visual and spatial material.

Sometimes I think high IQ authors get in their own way, they're too obsessed with subverting the form and proving themselves clever that they lose a lot of the smooth subtlety that the more story focussed, low IQ writers have.

Imagination and artistic sensibility are still the most useful traits an author can have.

C&P doesn't exactly have much groundbreaking insight into the world. God's relevance in an uncaring world and the moral agency of a capable individual aren't the headiest themes either. I'll agree though, that calling someone an intellectual after mentioning C&P is pretty damning.
