-I read "Why I Became a Conservative" a month after becoming one myself. Still one of the best political essays ever

- Scuton wrote "Modern Philosophy", to this day the best single-volume survey of the subject for the layperson. No other philosophy text gives you more for less work.

- Put words to things I had always felt about the incompleteness of libertarianism. You have reciprocal obligations to your community, it's not your right to become a fucking junkie

- With "Fools Frauds and Firebrands" was like some kind of mythic hero, wading into the weeds with the most sophisticated bullshit artists in history and returning to tell me (in so many words) "these people aren't shooting straight, they're fucking with you and you don't have to read them"

-Gave me indispensable conceptual tools like the "born free fallacy" - the belief that we are somehow enslaved by society when really it's the only reason we're free to self-actualize at all and not endlessly mired in survival concerns

I could go on. It's a serious loss. All the more shameful that they prop up an utterly lukewarm intellect like Douglas Murray as some kind of spiritual successor to Scruton (he's not even the next Christopher Hitchens)

There are millions of contemporary conservative philosophers better than Roger Scruton (tobacco shill). Peter Sloterdijk, John Milbank, Chantal Delsol, Alasdair Macintyre, the list goes on.
