He's popular in my country because we are living the future you've chosen for yourselves and longing for the past which we've both rejected.

In 50 years, if you are still alive, you will see how sensible conservatism (English, Burkean conservatism - not the evangelical American variety) can be, and how unscrupulous change can lead to cultural catastrophe. Your country will be changed, and it won't look good.

From Scruton's last article on the Spectator:

>For reasons I do not truly fathom I have a fan club in Brazil, and have finally agreed to turn up there to talk about the meaning of life. I am not feeling well, and the journey puts a strain on me. I stay in my hotel, reading Shakespeare. I groan in discomfort above streets where no sane man would walk, and am carted around to give lectures to crowds of young people, all of whom seem to be devoted to the task of saving western civilisation in the furthest point it has reached, which turns out to be Brazil. Maybe they are better able than I am to see the alternative is not another and better civilisation, but no civilisation at all.
>the alternative is not another and better civilisation, but no civilisation at all

Describes Brazil perfectly: no civilisation at all. Alas.

Feels bad man. I'm living in one of the worse areas in England. The average person is a mutt with no concept of place, its history or its future. There are few buildings older than the 1960's. Living here is like living in a time machine. Every time I visit a nice area of Britain I know exactly what lies in wait for it. I recently visited the lake district only to see a news article saying 'The lake district needs to change to attract more diverse tourists'. The quaint independant shops will be replaced by concrete mega stores, the rolling hills will be tarmacked over to create multi-story car parks.

We aren't really that conservative. What happened here is that a cultural conservative wing is starting to appear. Our media, our elites follow some kind of "cultural liberalism on steroids". Take whatever degenerate shit Netflix is pushing, our media is 100% on the same side. Any kind of push for some kind of sexual restraint is seem as "medieval" and "something that shouldn't be done, since , come on it is 2020".

Some people are noticing that this is not exactly leading to a healthy society and there is some kind of backlash starting. Bolsonaro is part of this backlash.

>In 50 years, if you are still alive, you will see how sensible conservatism (English, Burkean conservatism - not the evangelical American variety) can be
It won't be the same. Latam has always had a ethnically diverse population with a fairly loose caste system putting and aristocratic race at the top, so it's natural your turn right embraces an old style conservatism. I can tell you that America (and I suspect Europe as well) will not end up this way. The people of the aristocratic class in America were always the same stock as the masses at large, and now that this is changing into a Latam-ish model you're seeing a (relatively justified) mass anxiety from the founding European stock. Asian and Hispanic immigrants don't simply melt away into white America within a couple generations the same way Irish and Italians did, if anything the second and third generation Asian and Hispanic immigrants are the ones who are the main perpetrators of increasing racial consciousness. American society has always been and will always be racial and when things truly turn right in the coming decades it will be a fucking blood bath for everyone involved.

Fuck this one stings boys. "Fools Frauds and Firebrands" is one of the most savage indictments of the pomo / neomarxist nonsense machine you will ever read, written by someone who actually has the philosophical background to get into the weeds. Reading that book (a slog though it was) lifted a great weight off me - gave me "permission" in a way to accept that Foucault, Lacan, Althusser etc weren't laying all their cards on the table and could safely be ignored.

Scruton's "Modern Philosophy" was something they said couldn't be done - a thorough one-volume survey of modern philosophy for the layperson. If you want to get a handle on that subject NO other book out there gives you more for less work.

He was always willing to defend a mystical side of conservatism - to say that this thing shouldn't be changed, for no reason other than that it's ours and we hold it sacred and it deserves to be protected from desecration. A towering intellectual and also a huge inspiration to me as a writer - always erudite, never shying away from a 10 dollar word when it was really called for, and sometimes getting into the weeds (because he had to in order to meet his opponents) but always ultimately writing to be understood by common folk. Rest in peace and thank you.
