What are some introductory-level philosophy books? I tried reading some Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, Schelling, and just couldn't get into them. Really dry and boring to read.

That's fair, then. I need to go to the fathers of philosophy in order to really understand it all. My only complaint is how they're all just, stiff boring with no story. I suppose that's just philosophy, though. I'm an avid fiction/fantasy reader, so it only makes sense my complaint would be that.

Sorry, I didn't mean to be a dick. Don't give up on philosophy yet. If you're really having trouble getting into those philosophers I would recommend reading secondary works, which are usually more accessible. For example, try this one by William Barrett. It's probably the best introduction to existentialism and it's easy to follow. I can also recommend Will Durant's story of philosophy, posted above by someone else.

I usually caution against starting with Nietsche, like many want to do. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a great and seminal figure, but you are only going to get a poor reflection of his ideas if you don’t understand his intellectual pedigree. Tbh neitsche only fags usually become insufferable. Like it is said start with the Greeks, get to the earlier Christians (something you should do, again it’s all to common for the person who dives in first to nihilism to skip, but it is important to understand before critiquing an understanding), then early modern/enlightenment, then Hegel and his begels, then scheopenhaur before Nietsche.

Greeks. Plato, Neoplatonists, and Arouca especially. Much of Christian dogma actually makes a lot more sense with a Greco-Roman starting point. The metaphysical oneness that the ancient philosophers discussed became the kosher Christian idea of god.

>> No.14507139

On the off-chance this isn't a troll, I would unironically recommend just watching some youtube videos on the book/thinker you are going to read to get a bit of familiarity with the ideas. Academy of ideas has good videos on Kierkegaard and Nietzsche.

I honestly find that hard to believe. Where did you start with them? They are both known for being provocative. I would recommend The Present Age by Kierkegaard and The Gay Science by Nietzsche if you want to try again. If you don't understand them, at least familiarize yourself with Plato, neo-Platonism and the Bible first. Don't treat it like you would easily consumable books, movies or YouTube videos. If you want to get something from it, it will take discipline and work.

seconded, you are honestly better off watching a few youtube videos on various school of philosophy and finding out 1) which ones you want to know more about and 2) if you into abstract pontificating at all.
