What are his best works? What is a good starting point? What was his philosophy?

i have read his short stories and the temple of the golden pavilion. i didn't really care for either of them, but his books do have an aesthetic quality in them that i appreciate.

There are some truly dark, dangerous ideas in temple. The ending was also fantastic. Can't hate that final line. It really only grew on me after I read it and thought about it.

Read his short story Patriotism. He made a film of it in the 60s and in an interview regarding the film he said it is the single work he thinks people should read if they only read one thing.

His short stories aren't his best work, apart from Death in Midsummer and Patriotism. Temple is very meandering (I mean that neutrally). His other novels are a lot tighter.

no he was a monarchist and wanted japan to returned to it Ideologically a right wing nationalist, Mishima formed the Tatenokai, an unarmed civilian militia, for the avowed purpose of restoring power to the Japanese Emperor. On November 25, 1970, Mishima and four members of his militia entered a military base in central Tokyo, took the commandant hostage, and attempted to inspire the Japan Self-Defense Forces to overturn Japan's 1947 Constitution. When this was unsuccessful, Mishima committed seppuku.

That's pretty rad, but seems a little too narcissistic. I don't there has ever been an example of a violent act of protest leading to change or uprising in favor of the perpetrator. I'm more saddened he felt so desperate to do what he did (not the seppuku, thats still rad).

Are all his books like this? Both The Temple and The Sailor had this effect on me.
