Read all of Joyce's previous works (for which you need to have read the two Homeric epics, The Aeneid, Hamlet, etc.), read Joyce's letters, read his biography (Ellmann), read Vico's The New Science, read A Skeleton Key to Finnegans Wake. I have an Oxford edition and the bibliography section recommends many helpful guides and websites (there's a website where the entire thing is annotated).
