Let's discuss character names in fantasy. What makes a name good or bad? What is your favorite or least favorite name from a fantasy book?

Like for example I am writing a fantasy book inspired by Greek & Inuit mythology. The main character is named Zale, & all characters in his homeland have Greek names like Aleksander and Octavia. The characters he meets on his journey (outside of his homeland) mostly have Inuit names like Amarok, Kataum, and Ijiraq. Are these names good or bad?

Just asking because we were talking about cringe names in the last thread and I don't want to be cringey.

I think this is going to be the year I commit sudoku. I literally depend on books to give me a sense of joy to take my mind off living. This year makes it my 2000th book I read. Everything is the same now, nothing gives me feelings anymore. I think it will happen this year. I was planning to an hero on or before 2012, but I got into reading and it help me survive. Reading doesn't do it's job much these days. Health is failing again, sfff is dying and my job is looking like it will snuff itself out too. Everything is lining up smoothly for me to leave with no strings attached.
Just want to say thanks for all the shitposting and memes, you truly made life a little more bearable. Just posting this here because it's my first thread for the year. If you see me fall off later in the year you know it was because I necked myself.

Not really. Irl muscle girls sure, but in fantasy? That shit is pretty well liked. What man wouldn't dream of having a warrior gf with a body that is peak physical perfection yet also unrealistically stacked. Also fantasy shouldn't be catering to normies anyway, that's how shit gets ruined.

Dead Space is set in the future. MC is a miner/engineer guy part of a rescue team responding to a distress call of a massive ship. When they board the ship its full of mutilated corpses and damage everywhere to the ship. Many of his crew die and you have to use engineering weapons and regular stuff to fight the monsters on the ship called necromorphs as you repair the ship so you can leave and get help. You find out that researchers on Mars discovered a giant alien artifact and are studying it, and it was secretly brainwshing people. A cult ultimately formed and became the main religion of mankind. Its that artifact that is causing all brainwashed people and creating monsters. Eventually Mars or Earths collapses, cities riot and shit gets funky. Massive conspiracy involved.

Or something like that. Its been a while. First game was very good. Next two continue the plot but the gameplay suffered a lot.

He has very little time (compared to what has to be done, i.e. getting strong enough to save his home) and he wastes it on something that won't get him much stronger? Why go after the life aura pulse without getting some clean water first? And do on.
Thankfully after all the shit I've read I can mostly ignore all that and still get a lot of enjoyment out of the book.

I feel your post needs more clarity.

Firstly, the OP of the thread cannot regularly bump their own thread, so if you're making a thread that's likely to die, make sure that you create the thread on a different IP, for example use your mobile data to do it and your wifi to reply normally.

Secondly unpopular threads need to be bumped regularly to avoid it falling off the board. This takes fuckloads of dedication if you're doing it alone. I suggest putting the thread in your threadwatcher. 4chan-x's threadwatcher will tell you what page it is on in the catalogue which will help you to bump it.

Thirdly, if you have other people to help it's a lot easier to make a thread last for days. For example, if I'm in an unpopular thread and someone else notices it hits page 9, they'll reply too but of course no one tells anyone else that they're doing it, it's just a cheeky unspoken group effort. And no one says bump either because forcing generals is highly frowned upon, they tend to reply to someone else's posts. Sometimes people trying to pump life into a dying thread will bring up controversial topics which can work for a while, but then dies off or it will kill off the original inhabitants of the thread or you get drowned out by other people posting. There's also cheeky ways that people use to generate discussion by posting an image of whatever it is that they want to discuss and putting a very general threadstarter in. That way other people coming in will keep it on life support while the core fandom posters can live in it. Sometimes people will also samefag to keep threads alive.

Like the anon I'm responding to said, it's a lot of work and if no one else is responding you still have to go to sleep at night. You only do this if you are completely desperate for some discussion.

And seriously, the vast majority of /lit/ doesn't even read so you will probably get pushed off by the thousandth philosophical//pol/ thread. Forcing threads works a lot better on boards like /a/ with a high population and which isn't too fast and which gets regular injections of material, wringing book discusssion out of people is really tough because it tends to be one massive plot not episodic dripfeed that progresses slowly. And it is easier to discuss classics because more people are likely to read them whilst there are a fuckhuge number of books out there, finding someone else who's also read it is hard.

Brienne is kinda cool, but they don't really work imo, women don't have the temprement for it, or the physicality (though that doesn't really matter in fantasy).

also I do agree though I think female knights are potentially doable in a realistic setting if they are very rare or exceptional like Brienne in ASOIF for example, or some of the historical samurai warrior women, a top 1% female well equipped and trained should be at the very least able to compete with the average or slightly above average male soldier

Yeah, that goes without saying. If you're going to have half naked jacked giant women who can cleave a person in two with one strike then there's no issue having female knights int he same setting. The point was if you're going to try to sell you fantasy on sort of down to earth aspect then you can't really have either.

I started the first book of the Mage Errant series, Into the Labyrinth, yesterday and finished it just a bit ago. It had a rough start (i.e., poor bumpkin MC gets bullied by rich noble kid) but it turned into a surprisingly fun journey. Pacing was decent, no overuse of forced jokes, and the chemistry between the main characters feels natural. I'll continue with the rest of the series for now.
I'll probably end up finally dropping Regicide (Book 2 of The Completionist Chronicles) because I started it around two months ago and am not even halfway. I like the concept but I don't think I like the writing enough to continue.

Just gonna throw out some ideas.
IIRC we started with short stories and moved on to novels when interest picked up. I think short stories work really well for this since a lot more people are inclined to invest 30min-1h for some group discussion and even those who've already read it would be likely to do so again. Perhaps a week could be allowed for people to read and the remaining three for discussion? Eventually one short per week might be doable with interest, but that puts quite the burden on any anon who organizes it. Voting can be a chore. At that point maybe vote on an author for the month and then organizer picks the stories for each week (they could of course solicit advice).

Well if you're not allowed The Scar because of steampunk the best is pretty easily gonna one of the Liveship Traders books

Your other main options are Red Wolf Conspiracy (weak main plot/magic from what I remember), Inda (slow coming of age novel), Hawkwood and the Kings (didn't like it felt like bad hist fic with a few changed to make it fantasy) and On Stranger Tides (kinda dated by it becoming a pirates of the caribbean movie plot)
The only other book that jumps out is The Bone Ships from last year which I really liked but it's the first in a series where the sequels are yet to be published and I haven't seen many other opinions of it. I'd still say that's your best option after Liveship tho

Or you could just go to historical fiction and read Aubrey–Maturin

It's same world different place, multi-pov's and less outright cowardly character beats but several of them do stuff you know is gonna be dumb before it happens. (If you do read more Hobb you'll learn that she loves having her characters make mistakes and suffer for it before they develop).
Wintrow kinda has parallels to Fitz but his flaws are more stubborness than cowardice/passivity.
The pirate pov is probably the best writing she's done tho, just a great character arc.

Also a decent percentage of the Jaghut are genetically evil and really powerful, the Jaghut Tyrants which oppressed the Tlan Immas, Jhagut are generally really powerful but solitary and don't work together.

Tlan Imass were the first humans, basically neanderthals but now all skellies and they have to obey whoever sits on the imass throne, Kellanved used them to conquer 7 cities or the other continent, nobody controls them rn

Anyone else hate prologues and epilogues? I don't know what it is about them, but I lose all interest as soon as I read "epilogue" or "prologue". Like these chapters are not real, or don't count. Especially since they so often follow characters which the story doesn't follow normally. So I'm just anxious to get to the "real" story. But I have to finish these chapters forcibly for the sake of context.

Tip for writers, just call your prologue chapter 1. Even if it's completely disconnected from the following chapter. Trick me into caring.

Depends on how they are used.
I like prologues that convey relevant information like the world or major powers, kingdoms, deities or just some important figures. I dislike prologues that foreshadow something or expose completely unrelated information that would only be relevant 3 books into a series. Then there's the recap prologues those are also fine in my opinion. Epilogues are fine also. But i like those that tell of what happens after a big books climax of the last chapter. Maybe a conversation to either conclude the story or glance over what became of the characters. A bit of hinting about what is next is also acceptable. I don't mean foreshadowing or spoiling future plots but the general idea of what could happen next.
