In the last thread the Monthly Reading Anon said that they were done with the monthly reading until later in the year, if they were to do it again. If you want the monthly reading to continue, reply to this post saying so.
Some alternatives would be:
Monthly focus on a book or series that is popular and encourage discussion about that. I noticed there was increased discussion from using the GOT OP.
Monthly focus on a chart and the books shown it
Monthly focus on a specific author's works.
Weekly focus on a short story
or whatever anyone else thinks.

Is Abercrombie's stuff worth getting into? I keep hearing mixed things about him. One common criticism I sometimes see is that he has his head up his ass when it comes to going all out on the "grimdark" shit, to the point where it often comes off as a parody even though it's not.

my main problem was that names in malazan were completely alien and inhuman and i couldn't latch onto anything about them to help me remember them or know how to pronounce them. i know in theory this is good when you're writing fantasy but in practice i found it annoying and frustrating
the few names i was able to remember were either because they were repeated so often i just remembered the way the words looked on the page or because they were sort of normal. for example i had no issue with anomander, that sounded vaguely ancient greek to me, so i was easily able to commit it to memory

Does anyone else find it really hot when the female yandere kills off every single one of the male's love interests until she's all he has left?

So I saw some anons in the thread yesterday talking about The Curse of Chalion, and I'd never heard of it before so I read it today. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Very light on action, but a very likeable protagonist and subtle wit in spades. I also really liked the way it portrayed the in-universe theology, particularly towards the end.
My biggest criticism is that many of the side characters aren't really distinct early on. You're dropped into a world with odd naming conventions and many characters are introduced quickly, but it's not until a fair way into the book that they're actually distinct in personality, but it was a minor fault and by no means spoiled the book.

The most recent from what I can remember is Jonathan Strange, but it's very hard to discover new works when the whole market is saturated with YA releases clogging the new releases sections of sites. Plus there are no great forums for modern literature releases.

Authors generally don't really know enough about engineering to write an entire series about it. This applies to a lot of things actually. Unfortunately this also goes both ways as having knowledge about something and including into a story doesn't always mean said story is good. Confessions of a Crap Artist may be the most humane PKD novel I'd read yet. It transitions between three main characters and details their subjective reality (i.e., how they view the world, judgments, beliefs and opinions, etc.) about as intricately as possible in a textual format.
