In the last thread the Monthly Reading Anon said that they were done with the monthly reading until later in the year, if they were to do it again. If you want the monthly reading to continue, reply to this post saying so.
Some alternatives would be:
Monthly focus on a book or series that is popular and encourage discussion about that. I noticed there was increased discussion from using the GOT OP.
Monthly focus on a chart and the books shown it
Monthly focus on a specific author's works.
Weekly focus on a short story
or whatever anyone else thinks.

Reply to this post with what you think the best book was of 2019 and why.
I'm not doing a poll because as far as I can tell there wouldn't be enough response or one person would rig it. At least this would hopefully provide some value to others to anyone trying to rig it.

Is Abercrombie's stuff worth getting into? I keep hearing mixed things about him. One common criticism I sometimes see is that he has his head up his ass when it comes to going all out on the "grimdark" shit, to the point where it often comes off as a parody even though it's not.

Part 2:
>The younger version of the bad guy kills himself as he comes face to face with what he will become to avoid becoming that person in the future
Doctor Who: Seasons of Fear (Audio)
>The main character who is quite bad joins the evil empire in order to take it down from within
Mobile Suit Gundam (Anime): Char Aznable kills the Zabi family although one of them was a decent person and you later get to see him be a genuinely decent person in Gundam Zeta, although that later flies off the rails with Char's Counterattack and after that you get to see what is basically his force ghost in Gundam Unicorn and he has moved on and reached contentment with himself and his former rival. His backstory is in Gundam Origin
The Traitor Baru Cormorant Supposedly what is supposed to but we're in the "I just betrayed all the good people... who were genuinely good" phase. And the bad guys are kinda loveable. But the plot might not deliver
>The bad guy wins and is totally evil
Abercrombie's First Law trilogy.
>The MC was part of the evil empire all along but mistreated and resolves to ruthlessly and quite amorally kill every last one of his family members as revenge and comes into moral conflict killing the genuinely nice people. At the end, he dies making everyone believe that he is the ultimate evil, but although he might have behaved amorally, he wasn't truly evil. He doesn't die in the movie compilation so that's an alternate ending and addition to the original story.
Code Geass

And maybe one final one if you are a hardcore Doctor Who enthusiast. It's a fun little historical and somewhat anachronistic story featuring Richard III, the Tower of London and Shakespeare but isn't congruent with Shakespeare's televised timeline (so no, that won't tell you what happens in this audio play)
Doctor Who: The Kingmaker (Audio) It turns out the bad guy isn't the bad person who history knows him for. In a way, he kind of wins.

my main problem was that names in malazan were completely alien and inhuman and i couldn't latch onto anything about them to help me remember them or know how to pronounce them. i know in theory this is good when you're writing fantasy but in practice i found it annoying and frustrating
the few names i was able to remember were either because they were repeated so often i just remembered the way the words looked on the page or because they were sort of normal. for example i had no issue with anomander, that sounded vaguely ancient greek to me, so i was easily able to commit it to memory
achamian also sounds vaguely like a name from antiquity so i was able to remember that. agreed on kellhus

So I saw some anons in the thread yesterday talking about The Curse of Chalion, and I'd never heard of it before so I read it today. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Very light on action, but a very likeable protagonist and subtle wit in spades. I also really liked the way it portrayed the in-universe theology, particularly towards the end.
My biggest criticism is that many of the side characters aren't really distinct early on. You're dropped into a world with odd naming conventions and many characters are introduced quickly, but it's not until a fair way into the book that they're actually distinct in personality, but it was a minor fault and by no means spoiled the book.

It's not a romance though and the original novel that it's from is not translated and it could be a colossal trainwreck and who knows what would happen next. But it sure did make me think about how much I miss scifi with characters that I feel invested in and scifi mysteries.

Why aren't there Daniel Black copycats? People copy William D Arand and Will Wight, but no one is copying magical engineering. That Blaise Corvin tried, but he killed his book with the forced tranny soapboxing he employed.
No one else uses magic to building devices.

Authors generally don't really know enough about engineering to write an entire series about it. This applies to a lot of things actually. Unfortunately this also goes both ways as having knowledge about something and including into a story doesn't always mean said story is good. Take the guy who wrote Shadow Campaigns, the author is obviously into military strategy from a certain era but his books in terms of characters and plot got progressively worse.

I didn't mean for you to say what you read from each of my listed genres. I was asking for you to say which ones gave you a tingle when reading. For me it's magic of any kind. I just like the idea of using strange energies to work feats in minutes / hours that would take us days - months plus long hours and workmanship to accomplish.
What do you daydream about? What do you fantasize about? I want Tony stark's iq and knowledge to use it, and bleeding edge armor that is stored in my bones. I would be able to build anything.

What about you? Do you wonder what would happen if ww3 broke out? An asteroid hit? Do you like surviving off the land? Maybe you like economic fantasy?

I know. I was just having fun. Most of the stuff I listed were video games anyway. I don't have such narrow interests. It's more about how the idea is sold to me, rather than what the topic is. But I do like when impossible elements are introduced to a story. Hence why I'm in here, and not another thread. The things I fantasize about today, are the things I want to create. And what I want to create are not necessarily the things I want to read about. So it's difficult for me to tell you a simple thing I'm into.

Confessions of a Crap Artist may be the most humane PKD novel I'd read yet. It transitions between three main characters and details their subjective reality (i.e., how they view the world, judgments, beliefs and opinions, etc.) about as intricately as possible in a textual format.
