Who are some lyricists who deserved a nobel for their lyrics more than Bob Dylan (not that any lyricists should have gotten one, but who would at least be more worthy than him)? Pic related, obviously.

Because at best lyrics are poetry, but poetry that has to be mediated to fit the rhythm and structure of the music. I know poetry originated as sung, but there are few modern bards willing to make music that fully serves as a vehicle for delivering poetry without somewhat also compromising the poetry to fit the music. This is also why lyric music is generally inferior to instrumental music as music, the music is often compromised at least somewhat to fit the lyrics if the lyrics are required to have any quality or value at all. Art of one medium tied to another will always have to sacrifice some of its pure vision in that medium to serve the other, so while it can be good or even great, its theoretical heights are lower than art of one medium unconstrained by requirements to another.

I would actually say Eminem. Some of his greatest songs can indeed be compared to poetry, what with the wordplay and intense rhyming that goes on. For example, Stan and Criminal as well as Drug Ballad

A dreaded sunny day
So I meet you at the cemetry gates
Keats and Yeats are on your side
A dreaded sunny day
So I meet you at the cemetry gates
Keats and Yeats are on your side
While Wilde is on mine
So we go inside and we gravely read the stones
All those people, all those lives
Where are they now?
With loves, and hates
And passions just like mine
They were born
And then they lived
And then they died
It seems so unfair
I want to cry
You say : "'Ere thrice the sun done salutation to the dawn"
And you claim these words as your own
But I've read well, and I've heard them said
A hundred times (maybe less, maybe more)
If you must write prose/poems
The words you use should be your own
Don't plagiarise or take "on loan"
'Cause there's always someone, somewhere
With a big nose, who knows
And who trips you up and laughs
When you fall
Who'll trip you up and laugh
When you fall
You say : "'Ere long done do does did"
Words which could only be your own
And then produce the text
From whence was ripped
(Some dizzy whore, 1804)
A dreaded sunny day
So let's go where we're happy
And I meet you at the cemetry gates
Oh, Keats and Yeats are on your side
A dreaded sunny day
So let's go where we're wanted
And I meet you at the cemetry gates
Keats and Yeats are on your side
But you lose
'Cause weird lover Wilde is on mine

idk what he was trying to say but sounds based af

The cause is Ozymandian
The map of Sapokanikan
Is sanded and beveled
The land lone and leveled
By some unrecorded and powerful hand

Which plays along the monument
And drums upon a plastic bag
The brave-men-and-women-so-dear-to-God-
And-famous-to-all-of-the-ages rag

Sing: Do you love me?
Will you remember?
The snow falls above me
The renderer renders:
The event is in the hand of God

.........
..
.
.
.....

So we all raise a standard
To which the wise and honest soul may repair
To which a hunter
A hundred years from now, may look and despair
And see with wonder
The tributes we have left to rust in the park
Swearing that our hair stood on end
To see John Purroy Mitchel depart
For the Western Front
Where work might count
All exeunt! All go out!
Await the hunter, to decipher the stone
(and what lies under, now)
The city is gone

Look and despair
Look and despair

Lord Worm

Capricornus Rex in tenebris
I long to feel the dark caress
Of your cloven hooves;
I seek the loving warmth of your anus
As I place my worshipful
Lips about your teats.

We hate, and so we gather
By the light of the moon;
The art of veneficium...
This we learned from you...
To make them grieve in their lord,
Their redeemer in flames
Fanned by the scorn of the children
Who now curse his name.

Sire of sin,
You embody me
Undivine...
To you we congregate;
None so vile,
Your magnificent
Crown of horns
Inspires deeds maleficent.

Destroy the parasite [x3],
Destroy Jesus Christ.

They'll crawl in their perdition,
The righteous will be lost
Where gutted angels lie fucked...
Beneath the feunral cross;
We'll dig them a mass grave soon,
And bring to their knees
Those who would have rescinded
The laws of disease.

"The children have turned",
The cherubs wail,
As anticross triumphs
Where the cross has failed.

Hell-spawned majesty, we eagerly
Await the advent of the
Next millennium
When you will return with a swarm from
Beyond to claim your carnal
Lost dominion.

And I drown a little more every day
The wind blows so slowly now
The trees are dry dead
Walls to me they cannot hold back the storm any longer
It will break around us first
If there's a god
If there's a God
When I stand there at the piled blood camp
Again I flick open the inner eye
If you too open your eyes you shall see
The entire sky filled with weeping angels
The entire heaven filled with weeping angels
And the central sun and sum of all
God too weeping

We shall be judged

She said always remember never to trust me.
She said that the first night she met me.
She said there's gonna be a time when I'm gonna have to go with whoever's gonna get me the highest.
She said I won't be much for conversation if we go and do the rest of this.
She said I've never been much for conservation. I kinda dig these awkward silences.
She's got those bones brigade videos. she knew them back and forth.
She's slept with so many skaters. she had the place to herself.
She had a couple hundred bux. and he had nothing but the number.
She said I like the guy who always answers the door.
He never asks you what you came to his house for.
She said I won't be much for all this humbert humbert stuff.
I've never done so much of this. I have to try so hard not to fall in love.
I have to concentrate when we kiss.
She mouthed the words along to "running up that hill."
That song got scratched into her soul.
He's never heard the song before. but still he gets the metaphor.
He knows some people that switched places before.
She said I really like the crowds at the really big shows.
People touching people that they don't even know, yo.
I guess the heavy stuff ain't quite at its heaviest by the time it gets out to suburban Minneapolis.
We were living up at Nicollet and 66th.
With 3 skaters and some hoodrat chick.
Drove the wrong way down 169.
Almost died up by Edina High.
